How do i make a birthday cake for DP

I know this probably sounds really lame but i've never made a birthday cake before!

I want to make a fab one for DP's birthday but wouldn't know where to begin??

Can anyone help me out?

Thanks LL, that looks delicious and really easy to make too, will have to actually go out and buy some cake tins though Aren't I rubbish
