if a recipe asks for 180g broad beans, shelled weight, then how much do i need to buy when they're still in their pods?
and, er, how do i get them out of the pods?
thanks

buy lots - you get less out than you think. And you can use them for other stuff (love fresh broad beans)

to shell them, press the 'seams' of the pod and it should pop open and the beans will come out pretty easily.

God I hate recipes that do this. WTF don't they tell you what quantity you actually need?

I would double the weight if you're buying fresh, or just buy frozen. IMO they are one frozen vegetable that is almost as good as the fresh variety.

If you're buying fresh, you'll find a kind of seam down the side of the bean - put your fingernail or a knife in there and slide it down to open the pod. Should open quite easily.

thanks both, i was going to try frozen but everywhere seems to be out of stock - my local shop sells them fresh so i'll just buy masses and we'll eat beans all week if there's any left over...
