What bread does everyone eat?

It feels like my husband has purchased almost every wholemeal bread there is in the market and cannot find one he truly enjoys. For bread lovers, where buying just any bread is just not an option, what wholemeal bread do people recommend? I live near Kingston.

@bottleofredbottleofwhite agreed , I don't mind the white one but Jacksons malted bloomer is my absolute favourite and makes the best toast ( I know it's not wholemeal!)

I make it, using half white and half wholemeal spelt flour. This makes it less dense than a fully wholemeal loaf. It needs a splash more water than a white loaf. I don't use a breadmaker and did it by hand till quite recently, but now have a mixer so use the dough hook.

One that you make yourself. I have a bread maker, and it is one of the best things that I own.

Snap, I was going to write just the same

Tesco finest sunflower & pumpkin seed loaf. Oh my god, it’s to die for.

IAMFLUFF · 26/05/2026 22:12

M&S white boule off the bread counter sliced

I make my own rolls but it's a bit long.

The recipe is 480g bread flour, 7g yeast, 10g salt (add the salt and yeast on separate sides of the flour) 20g soft butter and a glug of olive oil.

You have to knead it for 15 mins then leave it for 2 hours. Then make knot rolls and leave another hour. At this stage I often add sun-dried toms or chopped olives.

Then add egg wash and cook the 12 rolls on gm 8 for 15-20 mins. Until they sound hollow.

Ace recipe btw

See i buy that for our 'healthy' bread for the table and for sandwiches and everyone grudgingly complies.

A nutrition free tiger bloomer tho - bloody hell that's gone before you can say ham sandwich in our house! It's like i've bought a loaf of crack 🤣

Loos like I’m the only one on this thread that eats like a peasant 😆 Hovis 50/50 for me, it used to be just white sliced bread but thought I’d upgrade to 50/50 🤭

Aldi seeded sourdough is lovely.

Pandorea · 26/05/2026 22:42

Lidl low GI loaf is really good.

I'll only eat Warburtons Wholemeal. I've near enough tried them all and haven't liked any others. I got a loaf out of the freezer this morning and I was horrified to find my DH had cocked up yet again and bought the Hovis one. It's absolutely vile.

Thanks mate! The amount of olive oil really is pretty random. You can do it with just the butter but the oil makes in nicer. Also use a little oil when kneading rather than flour which can dry it out.

Bloody four hours odd to make bread though! Luckily they freeze really well. 😄

We are near a Brown Bread Bakery shop and their spelt loaf is incredible. We buy one loaf a week, it's expensive but worth it.

Tesco do a really good seeded wholemeal which we like for toast.

Wildfarmed seeded sliced bread. Can’t believe nobody has mentioned it so far as it’s blimmin delicious!

Chewbecca · Yesterday 11:27

Have you tried your local bakeries? Ours are far nicer than any shop bought loaf.

I make it in a bread maker, using 50% wholemeal flour and 50% Allinson Country Grain flour, with a few extra seeds chucked in and sometimes some walnut pieces. The bread maker is nothing fancy, cost about £40.

When I do buy bread I go for Hovis wholemeal granary.

Go to Cavan Bakery in Hampton Hill. Their bread is delicious.

The branch on Ham Parade is probably closer. Agree their bread is lovely, Thames Ditton bakery is also good.

It's a bit of a weird desert of indie bakeries round here - French Tarte in Surbiton is good for more specialty breads. I often end up buying sourdough at Gail's though, not least because they slice it.

Ole and Steen in Kingston sourdough is marvellous. Freezes well too. Yum!

Crafta · Yesterday 21:49

My absolute favourite is M&S sourdough with olives in it.

I just realised I missed a key ingredient out! Warm water! Would be horribly dry without. Just under 300mls.

Hope nobody tried it and thought wtf!? 🤣

What mak3vis your breadmaker please and is it small.

Seeded loaf from a local bakery. Stopped buying supermarket bread when I realised they all put palm oil in it.

Aldi sourdough, they do a a few different ones or Tesco wholemeal bakery bloomer if you like a lighter bread than sourdough.
