What bread does everyone eat?

It feels like my husband has purchased almost every wholemeal bread there is in the market and cannot find one he truly enjoys. For bread lovers, where buying just any bread is just not an option, what wholemeal bread do people recommend? I live near Kingston.

One that you make yourself. I have a bread maker, and it is one of the best things that I own.

I make it in the Panasonic bread maker. Usually 50/50 white and wholemeal. With seeds. I find bought bread a bit sweet. Occasionally I get sour dough from the Polish shop up the road. And I also make Irish soda bread fairly regularly.

Sainsbury's wholemeal sourdough half-bloomer for toast at weekends. Too thick for a sandwich, unless you like doorsteps.

Jason’s wholemeal sourdough ciabattin

Hovis Granary - nothing else will do!

Jason's malted sourdough

Aldi sourdough, white or brown.
Or their Tiger bloomer.

Jason's malted sourdough

It’s nice, but it’s not wholemeal.

MissyB1 · 26/05/2026 08:35

Jason’s sourdough
My own Soda bread (takes 35 minutes start to finish)
M&S sliced bloomer

I go for lightly seeded from either Sainsbury's or Aldi. It's only 79p & dd loves it

You need to say how the bread you're buying is underperforming.
Too soft? Not tasty enough? Too sweet or falls apart?
Do you want it for toast or sarnies or toasties or ... ?

I'm not a bread fan so not much help!
I tend to go for the whole wheat with lowest salt content.
I never liked the bread we made with Panasonic bread maker, I sold Panasonic after a year.

I got some free rye sourdough recently from Waitrose. I'm not normally a sourdough fan but I love rye+caraway, I'd look to buy it for myself. ... that bread plus the Caraway bread I get in Polish shops in Ipswich (must be everywhere). The caraway-rye bread is technically mixed with white flour, it's fairly stodgy. in California we had Caraway rye that was a bit lighter.

Home made sourdough with a variety of flours

Lidl bakery does a range of very nice bread. I particularly like their low GI one. Sainsburys do a loaf with olives in, we get that one fairly often too.

Gluten-free brown loafer

I rarely eat bread. If I do it's a tiger bloomer or homemade with Greek yoghurt.

EmpressaurusKitty · 26/05/2026 12:24

My homemade sourdough.

BillieWiper · 26/05/2026 12:29

I make my own rolls but it's a bit long.

The recipe is 480g bread flour, 7g yeast, 10g salt (add the salt and yeast on separate sides of the flour) 20g soft butter and a glug of olive oil.

You have to knead it for 15 mins then leave it for 2 hours. Then make knot rolls and leave another hour. At this stage I often add sun-dried toms or chopped olives.

Then add egg wash and cook the 12 rolls on gm 8 for 15-20 mins. Until they sound hollow.

Sourdough bread is lovely toasted but for everyday sandwiches Jackson’s bread is definitely the best.

Ooo yes. The Tesco own brand is lovely x

A local bakery make a 7 seeded loaf, which is absolutely amazing.

Lahsania · 26/05/2026 12:55

We tend to eat Jason’s because hoping it’s healthier. Àlso love soda bread. Sometimes treat ourselves to a tiger loaf, so good for toast. Ciabatta for BLT’s.

HarmoniousHumbug · 26/05/2026 12:56

For many years I ate Hovis wholemeal, thinking it was good for me!

Then I started trying to cut down on UPF’s and was horrified by the ingredients in my old favourite.

I know own a bread maker and love experimenting with different recipes. It’s my favourite piece of kitchen equipment.

Go to Cavan Bakery in Hampton Hill. Their bread is delicious.

Mossstitch · 26/05/2026 13:31

Done a trial of most for my sons (I prefer homemade or soughdough for toast) best liked have been jacksons or strangely favourite was asda exceptional range farmhouse which is wholmeal and rye.

Empress13 · 26/05/2026 13:50

In love Jason’s sourdough for toast with avocado and poached eggs but not for sandwiches. It has to be super seeded for sarnies
