Help! How much is a 'piece' of ginger?

Sorry, stupid question! But if a recipe (soup) says a piece of ginger, chopped and peeled, what does it mean by a piece?

Any answers gratefully received!

It's normally a 'thumb sized' cube, about an inch square.

i would say about as big as your thumb, up to the first joint iykwim!

thank you so much! I can't believe you've all taken trouble to solve my dilemma. I'm sure my dh and dss will be glad too at not having ginger overdoses tonight!
