What side dish should I take to a pizza night?

Been invited for pizza and drinks at a friend's who was recently gifted a pizza oven. There will be 10 of us in total, 5 couples, all adults and the hosts have asked if everyone can bring a side along. They're already making garlic dough balls and a dip and dessert and salad and coleslaw have already been claimed by other people. It's very casual and we'll have to option to heat things up if needed.

I'd rather make something than just buy something. No dietary requirements. What would you make?

Another type of salad would be fine. Or a cold pasta salad or a potato salad. Or something sweet? Or mini baked potatoes. Or some homemade hummus and crudites. My sister makes a lush salad with rocket, sliced oranges, and pine nuts. Cold pasta with chopped up sundried tomatoes, black olives, red onion - it's quick and easy to throw together but it tastes amazing as a BBQ side.

Chicken thighs cubed, skewered, brushed with homemade teriyaki sauce...pop in oven for 30 mins at home and back in the oven when you're there, highest heat 15 mins.

I’d go for another type of salad, not leaf or cabbage based. A cowboy caviar type salad would be good (with corn, beans and avocado) or one with chickpeas, crunchy veg and feta. They also travel well as long as you do the avocado last minute.

I love chicken wings so that gets my vote.

If you want to do something a bit different try Lebanese (jawaneh) wings. Basically mix together crushed garlic, lemon juice, pomegranate molasses and olive oil (chuck in some
chilli or as el hanout if you like spice) and marinade for a couple of hours before baking in the oven.

Quicker alternative if you have one near you - B&M do an awesome salt and chilli pepper seasoning!

Ooh those Lebanese wings sound great @Paperwhite209 especially as I have some pomegranate molasses that needs using!

They are really good! There's loads of variations of the recipe on YouTube.

I was heading out to an appointment and couldn't find the one I used initially which also included onion but tbh I just make it up to taste now.

hahagogomomo · 20/01/2026 14:40

antipasti eg marinated artichoke, sun blush tomatoes, olives, stuffed peppers

CompleteMere · 20/01/2026 14:52

Loaded potato skins? They tend to reheat better than wedges I think.

fruitypancake · 20/01/2026 15:02

Feta, mint and watermelon salad
Parmesan chicken goujons

fruitypancake · 20/01/2026 15:02

Ohh or corn on the cob with lime and smoked paprika

Sgtmajormummy · 20/01/2026 15:11

Grated carrots dressed with lemon juice, olive oil, garlic and a touch of mustard. It’s like crack to me!
Maybe an assortment of San Pellegrino fizzy drinks, to follow the Italian theme. They do nice adult flavours like blood orange or bergamot. There’s often a lack of non-alcoholic choice.

S’mores or cookie dough ready to go in the pizza oven once it’s cooling down?

Corn on the cob!

How big is the pizza oven? You’ll all be eating at different times. Coleslaw would be the most versatile I think.

biscuitcat · 20/01/2026 15:57

So many fab ideas! Could cornbread with honey butter work? It would complement the salads already there nicely.

Captainj1 · 20/01/2026 15:59

If your friend hasn’t experimented yet with the pizza oven, I’d take takeaway pizza 🤣

SpiceGhoul · 20/01/2026 21:34

More great ideas thanks all.

@boulevardofbrokendreamss I'm not sure, but it's a very casual affair so I'm sure it'll work out fine and nobody will mind waiting as there'll be plenty of other stuff and drinks available
