You had an interesting kitchen!

😂 I also thought this!

Eye level grills were the best! Properly cooked the cheese on toast - rather than kind of warming it up....

I wish they'd bring them back. #bringbackeyelevelgrills

Things in my childhood kitchen (60's/70's) that are in my kitchen right now:
Egg slicer
Knife sharperner
Palette knife
Fish slice
Pyrex pie plate
I used the knife sharpener just yesterday.

I don't have an oven or a grill. We had both of those in the 70s. We also had a coffee percolator. I do have a coffee machine, but it makes espresso, cappuccino etc.

We had a breakfast bar and a serving hatch too. I don't have either of those. We definitely had a washing machine and I'm pretty sure we had a dishwasher too but again I don't have either. I live in a small flat.

Several mentioned already: hand mincer, egg slicer, chip pan, also a pressure cooker which my mum seemed to use a lot.
My parents met in Scandinavia and lived there for a while (2 countries) and they had The Great Scandinavian Cookbook.

@youegg A big monthly calendar with every female in the house’s menstruation due date on it. No way!

Yes! I thought it was totally normal! TBF it was handy but yes, a picture of the Yorkshire dales with EGG PERIOD in capitals in one of the boxes, MUMMY EGG PERIOD etc etc

A retractable clothes line
A pantry which also housed the washing machine and spin dryer,
you had to pull the washing machine out and fill it with a hose from the tap. This was before twin tubs.
Camp coffee.
Glace cherries
Glass baby bottles.

My first thought was my mum, but this is lighthearted .. so yes, the chip pan.

Ditto!

FurForksSake · 22/12/2025 12:35

tea pot. Dh drinks black coffee and I drink one specific soft drink. The kids sometimes have a cuppa (10 and 12) but usually hot chocolate so no call for a pot.

A bowl that doubles as a family eick bowl. When my kids were small I bought them each a silver plastic washing up bowl, they live under their beds. I have sicky kids, one with reflux and one with migraines so they’ve been very useful.

NellieJean · 22/12/2025 12:38

Believe it or not a gas powered fridge complete with a pilot light.

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 22/12/2025 12:40

Oh yes, I forgot the pantry!

All the shelves and drawers in the kitchen were lined with wrapping paper DM had saved from birthday and Christmas presents, and ironed flat. She very much had the make-do-and-mend ethos left over from WW2 when everything was scarce and was used over & over again. Thanks to her, I still cut up old envelopes to use for shopping lists.

OldandTired66 · 22/12/2025 12:55

A bath under the floorboards, in front of the fire.

InveterateWineDrinker · 23/12/2025 10:57

Staff😁

Servis Twin Tub washing "machine" and wooden tongs for hoiking out the dripping clothes - took up over half the kitchen when pulled out

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 23/12/2025 13:44

Oh yes, we had a twin-tub, it was hard work but very effective. DM bought another one when I got married and gave us her old one. We had to cram it in the back of a mini metro and then lug it up a concrete stairwell to our 2nd-floor flat!

Bobbedhairdontcare · 23/12/2025 13:50

Chip pan, rubber hoses on taps, loose tea dispenser attached to the wall and rubber things on wall to hold tea towels that caught your finger when you pushed the towel in.

IAmKerplunk · 23/12/2025 13:51

A hamster and gerbil cage plus a massive fish tank

IAmKerplunk · 23/12/2025 13:53

Washing machine. Mine is in my kitchen - growing up it was in the garage, same as the freezer and tumble dryer. Garage was accessible via a connecting door from the house and it was great not having those appliances in the kitchen. Unfortunately I don’t have the room to do the same!

goingtotown · 23/12/2025 14:16

Milk jug.

Lengokengo · 23/12/2025 14:21

Foil behind the radiator.

A little serving hatch to the dining room.

A dumb waiter ( different house)

Nevergotdivorced · 23/12/2025 14:25

Hornsea Pottery.
Clear Pyrex pans called Vision I think.
Tupperware…..lots of it.
A horrible little soap holder with suckers on it, it always was grimy.
Plastic ketchup and salad cream squirt bottles.

MrsLizzieDarcy · 23/12/2025 14:28

Earthenware teapot, milk jug and sugar bowl. On a funky brown tray that only came out when we had visitors. And the eye level grill. And Mum always had a washing up bowl, something I've never had in my kitchen sink!

SleafordSods · 23/12/2025 14:29

Pressure cooker.

A fridge powered by Gas.

DA had a kitchen maid on a pulley.
