strawberry birthday cake recipe needed

My son has given me a very detailed description of the cake he wants for his birthday: a red strawberry cake (the cake has to be strawberry flavoured) with icing and strawberries on the top and some Superman decorations. I think I'm ok on the icing, the Superman decorations, the strawberries on the top and turning the cake red. What I don't have is a strawberry cake recipe. Anyone have one? Oh, and it has to be non-dairy or fairly easily made non-dairy, too.. I can't use a packaged mix, either. I've been googling around looking for the magic recipe, but my eyes are now going all buggy and I need to sleep. Any help is much appreciated. Also, if anyone would know where I can get flags with cakes on them, let me know. Those were also specifically requested.

JJ wouldn't a plain sponge cake recipe work with strawberry flavouring? I've made sponge and fairy cakes with non dairy spread (Pura and Sainsbury's own dairy free) and they've turned out well. I use eggs though. There's an egg-free vegan sponge cake recipe here, at the bottom of the page What are flags with cakes on them though?

Could you get away with a plain (red!) sponge with strawberry jam in it and strawberry flavoured icing? Other than that, can you add strawberry puree to the cake or chopped strawberries. Frozen strawberries should be fine for this.

here is a recipe for Strawberry muffins, so you could make mini cakes maybe.
here's a recipe for strawberry cake, it uses a packet mix for the cake and adds strawberries. I'm sure you could make it from scratch though!
Hopefully, here is my Google search

As for flags with cakes on, can you print some from the PC?
Good luck!

(I'm assuming you can adapt the recipes for non-dairy by using substitutes where necessary)

Thank you! I'm going to try using WWW's recipe using SoupDragon's suggestion of using strawberry puree (sweetened) instead of the soya dessert.

My husband, when told of my son's request for flags with cakes on them, had exactly the same question as you, WWW. Then, when told of the "using the computer" solution, was amused that it never occurred to either of us. Thanks for that! I'm what can charitably be called inept at crafts, so the idea of drawing cakes was a bit unnerving. I'm assuming what he means are little paper flags with cakes on them placed around in decorative places. (He mentioned them as a "decoration".)

Thanks again.
