Filter coffee, why did we forsake this?

On holiday and very much preferring the old school drip coffee machine in the villa as opposed to the Nespresso.

Considering a return to it back home and wondering why it went out of fashion!

Ahhh the powers of marketing to create a ‘need’.

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 10/10/2025 09:11

The coffee is so much nicer, and not a punch you in the face caffeine hit 😂

We still have ours in the attic. I always thought there was a stale taste with filter coffee, and then had a brief neurotic phase about the bleach used in filters lol. Coffee shop filter always seemed to be stewed and kept warm for ages.
We have an espresso machine now, but I have been tempted by the pod type machines.

IsItSummerSoon · 10/10/2025 09:14

I recently went to an elderly relative’s house and they had one from the 80’s! The coffee was great. It surely must also be more environmentally friendly. I’m considering getting one but wondering why they aren’t popular anymore.

RosaMundi27 · 10/10/2025 09:14

The flavour is much better as most of the bitterest compounds stay in the filter. I have a mocca pot for espresso, but I use a filter holder which fits over the cup for a weaker brew. It's great, cheap, and lasts forever.

satsumasunrise · 10/10/2025 09:15

I agree. I use my filter coffee machine every day and I never use our fancy bean to coffee machine.
Filter coffee is so much smoother and far superior in my opinion.

FuzzyPuffling · 10/10/2025 09:17

We have a filter coffee "machine" bought for £20 from Morrisons. It makes lovely coffee and no papers required.

I don't like hot milk or fancy coffee so it does me very well indeed. DH also loves the stuff, and the spent grounds go in the compost heap.
What's not to like?

(Take note, coffee shops, WE WANT FILTER COFFEE! )

SimpleSingleLife · 10/10/2025 09:17

I much prefer it to espresso based coffee for an at home coffee. I don’t like it stewed but a fresh cup as soon as it’s brewed is great.

Highlighta · 10/10/2025 09:18

I agree with you OP. I have a Nespresso and it just is not the same as the good old filter coffee. I thought it might be because it drips through a bit slower, but that might not be the reason at all.

ThePoshUns · 10/10/2025 09:24

I’ve remained steadfastly loyal to my drip coffee. Far better for the environment. All this pod nonsense is marketing nonsense.

GreenSmithing · 10/10/2025 09:24

Filter coffee is higher caffeine both because the longer brewing time extracts more caffeine and because of the larger serving sizes. Stronger coffee taste doesn't mean higher caffeine.

I find filter is OK at home freshly made but out and about its quite often left to sit and tastes stale.

MinnieCauldwell · 10/10/2025 09:28

I long for the old syle coffee you got in cafes and the steamed hot milk. I never have coffee out now, always so bitter, not hot enough, takes an age to get served, costs a bloody fortune.

Bring back the old fashioned cafes!

ShaunaOfTheDead · 10/10/2025 09:34

I like pods if making coffee for one person, either with hot milk or iced. Pods are recycled via the Costa scheme (ask for a bag in store).

For two or more I use the cafetière and ground coffee. Grounds go in the food recycling bin.

tripleginandtonic · 10/10/2025 09:43

I use my cafetiere regularly.

dontmalbeconme · 10/10/2025 09:43

It's all about the filter coffee for me. I switched back after a year or two with a espresso machine bcause I missed the filter coffee flavour.

Filter coffee just tastes smoother and richer without the bitterness. I buy Sainsbury's 1kg bags of Columbian beans and grind them myself. Delicious.

RumNotRun · 10/10/2025 09:45

I have a filter coffee machine and bought a reusable filter to put in it instead of paper ones. I love it.

Neemie · 10/10/2025 09:48

We always use a filter coffee machine.

Of all the coffee shops, I only go to Pret for their filter coffee for 99p (49p if you take your own cup!). It’s perfect; never too hot, so you can drink it straight away rather than having to wait three months for it to cool down to less than scalding level 😂

SeaAndStars · 10/10/2025 09:53

I have a mokka pot that I've been using for 30 years. The best coffee and you don't need to buy anything other than coffee.

I feel like I can taste the paper in filter coffee.

Nighttimeistherightime · 10/10/2025 09:54

We use ours every day. I bought it when pregnant with my youngest… she’s 16 now! It cost under £20 and the coffee is so much nicer than the machine I tried for a while.

YorkshireFelix · 10/10/2025 09:59

We have a very lovely filter coffee machine and it gets used every morning. I have a grinder too so grind the beans fresh. All the independent coffee shops near me offer filter if you want it but I think people prefer a flat white etc if they are going out. I agree that Pret filter is decent and very good value - I always get one if I’m at work.

This is the machine I have. We have it in a gorgeous teal colour but I dont think they make that one any more. Pricey but would highly recommend - https://www.moccamaster.eu/kbg-select-uk-plug-53810-c

Not a massive fan of Starbucks but they sell filter coffee which is the main draw for me, except there's never any on and they always offer an americano at the same price which just isn't the same. We've started ordering ahead on the app and they then put a pot on.

We've not had a kitchen for a few weeks and I'm so missing our at home weekend filter coffee.

Missey85 · 10/10/2025 10:03

I hate filter coffee 🤮 i'd much rather a latte ❤️

JadziaD · 10/10/2025 10:09

Yup, we have an old style drip machine and I love it. Proper espresso with whatever milk choice you like is a different thing to me - I like it too but in a different way. Broadly speaking, pods make no sense to me at all.

The best thing about travelling in Europe is always being able to order a coffee with milk, in whatever language you need, it's not quite filter I don't think but it's always 100000x better than any americano and it's NOT the milkiness of any espresso with milk style drink.

TheRealMagic · 10/10/2025 10:10

Each to their own, of course, but I think filter coffee is really insipid so don't find it hard to imagine why people moved on! I do think it's also partly the move towards people having a lot more milk-based coffees, e.g. a latte, rather than taking it black or with a small dash of milk. I think filter coffee is just about ok if drunk black.
