Filter coffee, why did we forsake this?

On holiday and very much preferring the old school drip coffee machine in the villa as opposed to the Nespresso.

Considering a return to it back home and wondering why it went out of fashion!

I felt the same after a holiday in France where we got used to our drip coffee maker! When we got back, I got a second hand one for £10 and we did use it for a few months. DH prefers it as he likes a big coffee with a splash of milk.

However ..

I have a bean to cup machine and do love my lattes, so we ended up using both which was a bit much! Also more hassle to clean than my bean to cup, and we didn't always drink all the coffee. So the drip coffee maker is back in the cupboard and Dh has gone back to drinking instant, as he doesn't really care either way.

Absolute hard and fast fan of cafetière coffee at home. Had a pod machine but got rid of it as we never used it. Have different sizes of cafetière too so I can make myself an individual one if it’s just me having one

AndyMurraysCat · 10/10/2025 17:19

I prefer cafetière coffee, nice & fresh and no need for a coffee machine.

Ygfrhj · 10/10/2025 17:22

I used to make pour over with a small filter and a cup, it was great and no need for a filter coffee machine. Now we have an espresso machine I don't bother with filter coffee so much.

KitchenSinkLlama · 10/10/2025 17:34

I can’t drink nespresso coffee. To my palate it is very unpleasant (we have a machine and I’ve tried many many different pods). I love my dualit percolator but looking at the website, they only sell the spare parts now. 😫

GreenSmithing · 10/10/2025 20:07

Cafetiere coffee tastes different to filter coffee to me. Cafetiere is closer to espresso, whereas filter is lighter and smoother. Might be do with the grind?

The smoothest is cold brew but that takes a lot of coffee to make!

saraclara · 10/10/2025 20:21

I like the (much more then a) compromise coffee. Aeropress. Filter coffee pushed through the filter with manual pressure. No gunk, so clean but strong.

I do like pret filter though, when I'm thirsty rather than wanting the strong coffee experience.

I hate capsule coffee because you can't adjust it. When I make coffee at home I vary the amount of coffee I put in the Aeropress or my cafetiere, depending on what strength I fancy at the time.

I need to try and drip machine again, I would love your recommendations for a bean grinder please. I've always bought bags of already ground for the cafetiere x

Depends on your budget because you can spend what you want on a grinder. I’d prioritise a burr grinder over a blade one. I have the Sage Smart Grinder Pro which I got for just over £100 a couple of years ago when they stacked a discount code over a sale price. It’s been a pretty great grinder for the price, and especially for filter coffee. It sometimes struggles with grinding very light roasts for espresso though it wouldn’t struggle at all with cafetière at any roast level.

I coveted the Niche Zero and still kind of do but it’s just way more than I can justify on a coffee grinder. I’d check out James Hoffmann on YouTube for reviews because he’s done summaries of grinders at different price levels.

I had a lovely filter coffee today in Ikea, of all places.

We have a filter coffee "machine" bought for £20 from Morrisons. It makes lovely coffee and no papers required.

I don't like hot milk or fancy coffee so it does me very well indeed. DH also loves the stuff, and the spent grounds go in the compost heap.
What's not to like?

(Take note, coffee shops, WE WANT FILTER COFFEE! )

Coffee shops all sell filter coffee… you just have to ask

swingingbytheseat · 10/10/2025 22:32

Agree, plus I love a stove top coffee. Love the smell, love the ritual

OnlyFrench · 10/10/2025 22:35

Does anyone remember Rombouts? Plastic filter over a cup , very popular in the seventies. My mum thought she was dead posh when she had it.

Wbeezer · 10/10/2025 22:35

We switched back to a filter machine when we found out DH had high cholesterol, a bit of research on what to avoid led me to find out that non filter coffee has a substance in it that raises bad cholesterol. In filter coffee the filter removes it! I also like the ease of tossing the grounds in the compost bin. Got a free filter machine on Facebook marketplace!

Wigtopia · 10/10/2025 22:39

We have a v60 ceramic thing that you sit on the mug and line with a filter paper. It has no chance of breaking down like a coffee machine and not at all fiddly to clean as it goes in the dishwasher!

Talipesmum · 10/10/2025 23:04

Never liked filter coffee, I had one for a while but it wasn’t great - I always preferred cafetière coffee and it’s much easier with less kit. We have a pod machine as well now, and go between that and the cafetière. Happy to leave filter coffee behind without a backwards glance!

ThreePears · 10/10/2025 23:18

I have a jar of instant, a spoon and a kettle.

Works a treat. Nothing to throw away, the glass jar gets recycled and it's a darn sight cheaper. What's not to like?

I’ve remained steadfastly loyal to my drip coffee. Far better for the environment. All this pod nonsense is marketing nonsense.

It's not actually, it uses far more coffee and a lot of the environmental impact is in growing and transporting coffee beans.

ComedyGuns · 10/10/2025 23:25

Nespresso coffee pods are no better than a Starbucks coffee. I now use a Bialletti stove-top mocka pot and use Illy ground coffee. It’s so nice it’s even put me off going to the artisan coffee places in our area.

I wish this were true but the pret at airports for example doesn’t have them because filter coffee is cheap and therefore “for the homeless” who don’t ask for coffee in Gatwick.

I assume it’s because they’re a loss.

77Fee · 10/10/2025 23:32

This thread has just reminded me that I've got a coffee percolator somewhere. I think I'll get it out this weekend and see if it still works.

I have a mokka pot that I've been using for 30 years. The best coffee and you don't need to buy anything other than coffee.

I feel like I can taste the paper in filter coffee.

Same. It does kind of ruin you for anything else though that I rarely enjoy coffees out and about. It's so responsive and you can have your coffee exactly as you like it.

whats not to like is the drink it producesGrin
Of course, if you do like it then that’s fine obviously. But it’s nothing like freshly ground good beans made in an Aeropress.

Costa stopped selling filter coffee several years ago.

I bought my dh this one. I don't know how it compares to other machines, but three years on and used every day it's still working well.
