Filter coffee, why did we forsake this?

On holiday and very much preferring the old school drip coffee machine in the villa as opposed to the Nespresso.

Considering a return to it back home and wondering why it went out of fashion!

whats not to like is the drink it producesGrin
Of course, if you do like it then that’s fine obviously. But it’s nothing like freshly ground good beans made in an Aeropress.

It all depends whether you think the resulting drink is worth the faff and the expense I suppose. 🙂

We travel to the US regularly, where filter still rules, and every time I am reminded how much I like good filter coffee and how much I loathe bad filter coffee!

Often get a pour over/V60 in coffee shops in the UK, but use a bean to cup at home.

I agree it's the variability of filter coffee when out and about that makes me avoid it. If it's fresh it's fine, though I personally prefer the espresso style. But when it's been sitting around and gone stale, or worse it's been on a hot plate and slightly burnt, it's horrible. And you can never be sure before you buy it which it's going to be.

100% this OP. We have a German filter coffee machine (which we bought after a self catering holiday in France years ago and having the exact same epiphany as you). We absolutely love it - the coffee is full bodied but smooth with none of the bitterness, and has the added bonus that can set it on a timer so a delicious and freshly brewed pot is ready to pour when we get up. I may be wrong but I suspect most people in the U.K. don’t drink a straight espresso but prefer a longer drink, so don’t really understand the proliferation of Nespresso (or equivalent brand) machines in the U.K. as I just don’t think that’s generally the natural tastes in the U.K. to drink a straight espresso in the way people would e.g. in Italy.

Just goes to show how tastes vary, Tim Hortons is foul, worse than starbucks.

Gosh. Silly me for enjoying the novelty of a different experience while on holiday.

I don't like filter coffee makers as I find it ends up tasting stewed. I don't like the old machines either due to waste. We just have 3 different sizes of cafetiere to suit single/double/multiple servings and nice coffee and it's perfect for us!

This happened to me too! I bought a percolator when I got home 🤣 loving having the drip coffee waking me up in the morning. Much better for the environment too with much less plastic x

I use a Clever Coffee Dripper for my morning bucketful. Simple and quiet.

Ha, so am I just now, in Scandinavia and exactly the same thought. Such nice coffee and with a pastry...

Love filter, cafetière, aeropress or stovetop coffee. I find pod coffee just tastes like instant with frothy milk. Also visited a dairy farm recently who were on a Nestle contract for their pods and there’s only 3ml of milk per pod!!! So god knows what else was in it.

You're using the wrong pods. You need the ones that just have coffee, e.g. Lavazza or Nespresso. The ones with milk in the pods are for those who like hot drinks, not proper coffee. And those pods are disgusting.

OverNotOver · 13/10/2025 08:28

I agree on the pods - quite like the nespresso ones, the ones which claim to produce a milky coffee on their own I find very insipid.

Ive had a few pod hot drinks on a holiday and the 'milky' ones just tasted like instant and powdered milk. Close to vending machine hot chocolate type taste.
