Has anyone moved to Ocado deliveries?

We are a family of two adults and DD6, currently have a monthly pass with Asda but the quality seems to be getting worse, especially the fruit and veg.

I normally have about 3-4 deliveries a month and spend around 350-400 a month on main shops and top ups. I cook meals from scratch and try to batch cook but buy snacks and most treats.

I've just had a browse on the Ocado site and some of the bit looks lovely, especially the higher welfare meat.

Has anyone moved to Ocado and been happy, I can get most deliveries in my area so open to suggestions too 😀

I used to use Asda but I got fed up with products out of stock/substitutions, so I switched to Ocado and haven't looked back. The process of receiving the shopping is much less onerous and there are very few substitutions. I only had one instance where there were products missing that had been paid for, and it was easy to get refunds for the missing stuff. As for prices, the ordinary everyday items tend to be no more expensive than elsewhere. There is, however, a good range of premium products if you don't mind spending more, e.g. a French brand called Picard which I like.

CarlaH · 07/10/2025 17:01

They are bizarrely more expensive for some products than actually physically shopping in an M & S but not for everything.

For example I noticed that a tin of chicken casserole is £4 in my M & S foodhall but £4.25 through Ocado. I cannot be bothered to check all the prices but I was a bit taken aback.

NewGirlInTown · 07/10/2025 17:47

Ocado is brilliant. I haven’t set foot in a supermarket in years!
I have a weekly Smart Pass delivery (which also means an early choice of Christmas slots)
Very few substitutions, great communication via text about the delivery, quibble free refunds when something goes wrong.
The drivers are excellent. Their recruitment process must be good as the chaps (usually) are polite, friendly and take great care with packing and delivery.
About half my shop is Marks and Spencer products.
The quality is so good. Yes, prices are going up, but that’s the same with all the supermarkets.
I don’t think I will ever go to a supermarket again, I hope they last for ever!

AdaColeman · 07/10/2025 17:48

I agree that sometimes the Ocado packing lets them down, I've noticed items marked "keep flat" packed sideways on, or soft fruit at the bottom of a heavy bag. But if items are damaged you can easily get a refund.
I tend to give them a bit of leeway on packing since watching a hilarious film about their automated warehouse packing robots.....countless lines of robots in a football stadium size warehouse all zooming around hurling items into packing crates!
Apparently much of Ocado's profits come from selling their warehouse automation system world wide.

Lovingthelighterevenings · 10/10/2025 21:15

Been using ocado for our fortnightly shop for 10+ years. Not having to think about finding a slot and having items automatically added every 2, 4 or 8 weeks is great.

Really don't much like the m&s range so try and stick to ocado or branded items as the ingredients list is usually smaller, the packaging isn't so much plastic but I still miss Waitrose who used to do butchers meat that wasn't full of water and wrapped in plastic like m&s. Some things are strange through - dozens of different gins but only one flavour of cottage cheese. But that probably says more about me than ocado.

WonderfulSmith · 10/10/2025 21:25

I’ve had a regular Friday night delivery from them for at least 15 years now. I don’t eat meat or fish so I can’t comment on the quality of those products but everything else is great. They do niche things too like a French frozen food range called Picard who have the best bake from frozen almond croissants.

Very rare for anything to be out of stock or substituted. Delivery is almost always on time.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 10/10/2025 21:34

I’ve used Ocado for about three years and I wouldn’t change to anywhere else. The big benefit is that they deliver from warehouses and don’t rely on products being sourced from supermarkets where everybody shops. As result I very rarely have items unavailable or substituted. Their drivers are unfailingly pleasant and helpful and I’ve never had a failed or late delivery. I think they’re great.

Loveisnt · 10/10/2025 21:36

I like the choice and quality of food on ocado but I don't like the online shopping app, find it difficult to use. Also the cut off is really early for finalising your order. I prefer Tesco for the ordering process. But M&S food is better!

PickleSarnie · 10/10/2025 21:38

Ocado are brilliant. Been with them since 2010. I probably only ever get a substitution once every three months. And, when I do, its a logical one. The app is brilliant. Although I'm not a massive fan of the update but it's growing on me. The ability to do one click adds is awesome.

Occasionally, ive had meat that has spoiled because of the packaging being split. But they've refunded with no quibbles everytime.

I have the delivery pass thingy and can get hourly slots as often as I want with £40 minimum spend.

They are always on time, sometimes early (but they phone to ask if it's okay if they arrive early) I would never switch.

I've been following this thread and got my first ocado delivery tomorrow, but please could someone explain to me what the smart pass thing is ? Thx

RedRiverShore5 · 11/10/2025 13:53

I found them quite good, I had a six month free pass but I don't bother with a pass now as I find it cheaper and more varied to chop and change, Sainsbury's often give me free delivery and the anytime slots for most supermarkets are generally very cheap, I probably use Ocado once a month or two when they send me an offer, hoping to entice me to get a pass

TheFoodLife · 11/10/2025 13:57

Ocado make Sainsburys look like a bad 70’s sitcom, they are so so so so so so unfailingly reliable and polite. I love Ocado, they are trouble free. Not many things you can say that about, these days.

You pay a flat fee for a year - possibly shorter periods available too, don't know as I pay annually - and that entitles you to unlimited deliveries except at Christmas. I have the midweek one, so get free deliveries Tuesday to Thursday. This is cheaper than a full Smart Pass.

ExcitingRicotta · 11/10/2025 13:58

@Unorganisedchaos2 we’ve just stopped using Ocado after years due to the ridiculous number of carrier bags they use and their open admission that theyre not planning to stop.
Swapped to Sainsbury’s - so glad we did, food is just as good, we’re spending less and 0 carrier bags.
Only slight downside is the app isn’t as good but it’s fine.

It's a delivery pass you pay for to get delivery's when you want, usually for 6 months or a year but DO NOT pay for a pass, as a new customer there will be an offer for 3 or 6 months free pass, I got 6 months free and was showered with coupons, money off and free box of Hotel Chocolat, the £17 one.

OnTheBoardwalk · 11/10/2025 13:59

I’ve got the £90 yearly anyday pass and I love it. I use it for main shop, top up shops and weekly deliveries to my mum. The midweek one is about half the price I think but I’d rather pay a bit extra for flexibility

I’ve had quite a few nice gifts over the years from them

ive been with them more than 10 years and have only had 3 late deliveries. I actually had one couple of weeks ago looking at more than 2 hours late which didn’t work for me. I phoned them, got through straight away, to cancel the order and I rebooked it. They sent me a voucher

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/10/2025 13:59

You get the money back for the carrier bags if you return them next time. Much quicker delivery turnaround with bags than trays.

goldenautumnleaves25 · 11/10/2025 14:04

We moved to ocado several years ago. i occasionally try the other supermarkets, and immediately go back to ocado. Products are fresh, arrive in the times-slot, hardly ever substitutions (and if, they are sensible), polite drivers and pain free refunds if something isn’t quite right.
Assa, tescos, morrisons, sainsburies are all awful for us - consider yourself lucky if you get half if what you ordered, squished and leaking.
Ocado is worth it.

goldenautumnleaves25 · 11/10/2025 14:06

Not a fan of the carrierbags, but you can return them. plus as their products are always fresh and in date, i have way less waste than with sainsburys for example.

RedRiverShore5 · 11/10/2025 14:06

Ocado is a bit like Apple TV there are a lot of free pass offers, though they must get exhausted sometime. They offered me another free pass recently but I was on holiday so didn't take up the offer but they will probably be back again

I was also reluctant to leave Ocado as I feared the poor service that I remembered from years back, but near us at least Sainsbury’s have been faultless.

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g it’s not about the money, it’s incredibly wasteful. No one would shop like that in person anymore and it’s incredibly lazy to do it online, I couldn’t excuse it any longer.

I find Sainsbury's good and Waitrose, I always book a Waitrose Christmas slot, I have booked one for this year. I wouldn't have said that Ocado was any better than these and they have at times squashed my food with the robot bagging.

89% of bags returned are recycled into new bags.
