Millions and millions of apples

Lifeinthepit · 18/09/2025 08:30

What do I do?? Cooking apples mostly. The wind last night has brought a lot down and so I'm not sure how well they will store. This year's crop is bumper too.

Usually I do crumbles until it's coming out of everyone's ears. Or just stew them for breakfast but I don't think it's going to cut it this time. I like cooking so would love any recipe ideas!

Do you have any neighbours with produce to swap? (Or to whom you would donate?)
Can you roughly chop and freeze in freezer bags?

TranquilityofSolitude · 18/09/2025 09:02

I made chutney yesterday. I managed to use 4kg of apples and made 15 jars, which now need to mature until Christmas. If you got some nice jars, they could make good presents.

Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow · 18/09/2025 09:03

Cider!

I have done the same but would like to try a new recipe, do you mind sharing yours?

I have also made several apple crumbles.

Apple paste to go on a cheese platter

Whole stuffed baked apples

stew some and pop in the freezer for 6 months

I’m obsessed with tarte tatin at the moment. It’s so simple. Half a 500g pack of all butter puff pastry rolled into a disc, 50g butter, 100g sugar.
You caramelise the sugar in an ovenproof frying pan, then add the butter.
Arrange halved and cored apples in the pan cut side up and cook in the caramel for 10 minutes. Then put the pastry on top and pop in a hot oven for 20 minutes.

About to have some for breakfast.

BIWI · 18/09/2025 09:15

I’ve been making loads of chutney - still have a gazillion apples to go though!

This recipe is my favourite so far - although based only on aroma, as it won’t be ready to eat for a few weeks.

Alternatively, I peel and core them, then just stew them down with a little bit of water (just to stop them burning as they stew down), and then freezing in 250g lots.

When I was a student I discovered baking apples with a filling of whatever chocolate bar I could get out of the snack machine: Mars, Snickers, Topic…. I never found one that didn’t work.

Oneearringlost · 18/09/2025 09:23

The problem is, I'm running out of freezer space! However I'm inspired by @TranquilityofSolitude and will do chutney. Makes the house smell lovely too.

I do juice and freeze ( keep old milk/juice cartons, cut the top off and pour into freezer bags inserted inside, then take out once frozen and use carton again). I sieve the juice to get rid of any sludge and it's the perfect...but I've got eating apples.)

Like the Tarte Tatin idea @TheCountessofFitzdotterel

isitmyturn · 18/09/2025 09:26

Where I live people put them out in a box by the gate.
I don't have an apple tree but have been "foraging" around the village and cooked loads of apple for the freezer.
Some keep in straw in the garage or shed.

I used this one:

I doubled the ingredients to get 15 jars.

This apple chutney has a tangy, sweet flavour which is perfect with cheeses such as cheddar, cheshire or white stilton.

Spiced apple cake is a favourite here, and feels very “country” with half wholemeal or spelt flour, I’ve also made date and apple chutney and apple upside down cake with my cooking apples this year.

Lots outside houses in boxes here too with "help yourself" signs on.

It’s really worth planting fruit trees. I planted a few-two apples, a Comice pear, a plum and raspberries-about 6 years ago, and I have so much fruit you would hardly believe it. It also helps that you can choose the fruit you like-I have pear Beth (the best ever), and although I can’t remember the name of the apples, I chose the varieties for specific flavour and early /late season characteristics. Now is a perfect time to buy them, as you can taste the types. I only have dwarfing root stock, so up to around 7-8ft high, perhaps.

This is an excellent thought…

Meadowfinch · 18/09/2025 10:35

I have the same. I slice, core and freeze them for apple pies through the winter.

I make apple and ginger jam, blackberry and apple gin, I make wholemeal apple bread and freeze it. Chop apple in to porridge with cinnamon. Apple and runner bean chutney.

I'm busy processing and stashing away as much as possible - I'm all for free food. 😁

James Grieve apples are wonderful. You rarely see them in supermarkets but are next to nothing, picked off a tree.
Your trees and produce sound perfect @Timeforabitofpeace .

isitmyturn · 18/09/2025 10:47

Last week I made muffins. A two egg sponge replacing 25g flour with ground almond and stirred in a dollop of cooked apple. Possibly the best cake I have ever tasted.

OverlyFragrant · 18/09/2025 10:50

Any petting zoos, pig farms etc nearby?

Or even a community kitchen kind of thing.

Boopear · 18/09/2025 10:55

I swapped most of mine with a local cider farm for free cider 😁. You may have somewhere nearby that would be very happy to have your excess? My local place started their apple swap sessions last week and they run through to end Oct.

Alas, around here everyone has apple trees, and a huge crop this year. People are sprinting away around corners from people approaching them with a bag of apples!

JaninaDuszejko · 18/09/2025 11:04

A friend of ours makes apple juice and cider with his, he has a pasteuriser as well so the juice keeps for months. We take our apples to him to make juice (my son loves apple juice).

JDM625 · 18/09/2025 11:16

Another idea is using the pectin from the apples to then make mint, rosemary, chilli jelly etc.

From memory, I roughly chopped the apples whole- seeds/skins and all, boiled then hung them in a jelly bag or pillow case overnight. I think you add sugar and some vinegar might be added at some point, but you'd need to follow a recipe.
