I have already warned dh not to come near me tonight or I will rip his head off and try and extract alcohol from his blood, the Fragrant Boys understand mum is a bit snappy tonight, but I need more distraction to stop me exploding in a rage of alcohol withdrawal. Awful isn't it, that the body can be so pushy in its demands for BOOZE!!!!!

So, go and have a look in your vegetable box, store cupboard, fridge etc, see what's out of date and needs using up and I'll make dinner for you, on the interweb of course. Or does anyone want any ideas for upcoming catering events?

TIA

suzy - pumpkin curry with the sambal sounds great as we love sri lankan food (and yep plenty of asian grocers around here to buy ingredients)

what does one do with a marrow anyway? aren't they just overgrown, tasteless courgettes?

i've decided to do a dry run on the cake in the next couple of weeks and see how that goes. friends are very relaxed so if i have to pull out it won't be a problem - but that makes me more keen to do it, as they are so lovely IYSWIM. yours and molecule's tips were really helpful, thank you!

Flapjack recipe coming up

popsycal · 29/05/2008 14:33

Flap jack

I triple this recipe....

5.5oz porridge oats (no idea why .5)
3oz demerara sugar
4oz marg or butter

I also add some dried fruit - chopped apricots are good

preheat oven (190 degrees c)
mis oats and sugar together
melt marg (i do it on defrost in microwave)
stir all together
add fruit if adding it
grease a baking tray REALLY well
pur stuff in and press it down hard, then some more
stick it in oven for about 15-20 mins
cut into wedges when warm but dont remove from tin until cold

Ooooh Issy - sorry suzy, am jumping in - you need the Gordon Ramsay pasta recipe that OliveOil once posted.....chicken with green beans...

very very yummy and easy

suzywong · 29/05/2008 14:45

marrows are just overgrown courgettes you are correct, and really pretty but pretty tasteless. And they take an age to cook

OK then pumpkin curry coming up, of course you use BNS

550g peepled pumpkin cut in to cubes
1 chopped onion
1 crushed garlic clove
2 seeded red chilis cut in to very thin strips
300ml of thin coconut milk - OOOOOOOOOO you can use the milk from your fresh coconut!!!
2 tsp curry powder which should include cinnamon, cloves cardomom, coriander, fennul fenugreek, curry leave and black peppercorns and aka Ceylon Curry. But you could use what ever you have plus any extra of the above
100ml thick coconut milk, so from a tin
1 tbsp freshly ground black mustard seeds
simmer the pumpkin, onion, garlic and chili in the think coconut milk for 8 minutes with the lid on or until the pumpkin is tender
Add the salt curry powder and thick coconut milk and bring to the boil again
sprinkle on the mustard seeds and stir carefully and serve.

Well that's a new way of doing curry on me, I'll have to try it.

ni i dont know american pancakes, just the regular ones

nailpolish · 29/05/2008 14:53

thanks suze

suzywong · 29/05/2008 14:53

right, well what you do for enough for breakfast for 2 days

2/3 cup of SRF flour
1 tbsp sugar
half tsp baking powder
a little salt
an egg
125ml milk
drop of vanilla essence
some melted butter

mix them all together, I usually do it in a jug, in the order given until you get a smooth batter. You may need more milk but it must be thick and globby not runny.

Heat some oil and a knob of butter in a frying pan on medum heat and drop dollops of batter in two at a time no bigger than your fist. When you see air bubble all over the surface then it's time to flip over and you will need to cook them for far less time on the second side.
I serve them with nutella and honey (my ds2 is a skinny little runt who has a very limited food intake, he's full of beans though)
Clingfilm the remaining batter and store it in the fridge til tomorrow

thanks for that suzie, she is obbsessed with pancakes right now. its doing my head in making up batter mix every morning. i didnt know that you could store it for the net day.

MascaraOHara · 29/05/2008 14:58

If it's not to late I'd like a really good receipe for dumplings (and maybe even a stew to go with them) dd has just decided that she absolutely adores the things.

Oliveoil · 29/05/2008 15:00

those pancakes sound fab, am pinching that receipe

suzywong · 29/05/2008 15:01

you can also through in a dollop of plain yogurt in to those pancakes too. Actually on reflection I think you may want to havemore flour on hand, that may not be enough. Trial and error though

RubySlippers · 29/05/2008 15:04

can you let me have a really fab muesli recipe?

i have oats and some dried apricots

Oliveoil · 29/05/2008 15:05

on this thread

it uses raw chicken though but you could just reheat the cooked imo

vvvvvvv fattening but gorgeous

NotABanana · 29/05/2008 15:07

2 weeks? You amateur!

Someone suggested they give up for a year, I joined in and I am pretty sure I am the only one still going without!

BTW Suzy, made your chocolate brownies last week. Very mice but not the kids favourite. Currently got a chocolate fudge cake in the oven courtesy of Dame Nigella.

suzywong · 29/05/2008 15:08

dumpling to go with stew
rough measurements

1 1/2 cups plain flour
1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder
good pinch of salt
1 tsp of mixed dried herbs or more of fresh parsley
white pepper
mix altogether
now you really really must use white fat, be it white flora in a block but ideally beef suet or vegetable suet. Use a third of the volume of dry ingredients, and rub it till you get breadcrumbs as you would for normal pastry.
take the bowl over to the sink and turn on the cold tap to a trickle, now with a knife mix the water in quckly until it looks just wet enough.
With a light hand, form in to dumplings and drop in to the simmering stew.Put the lid on the stew and simmer for 6 or 7 minutes.

I love that recipe OO - I replace some of the butter with olive oil and it works just as well.

The kids love it too

MascaraOHara · 29/05/2008 15:12

Oooh thank you. Lard will be OK?

I am so going to make my dd's day when I get round to trying that receipe.

suzywong · 29/05/2008 15:13

so are you sorted, Issymum?

OP posts:
suzywong · 29/05/2008 15:14

yes use lard, it's the way our grandparents ate and it never did them any harm.
Lard is much maligned these days, it is a wonderful ingredient

OP posts:
MascaraOHara · 29/05/2008 15:15

I'm with you there. I use lard and goose fat regularly... I know people say you shouldn't but hey-ho.

Thanks again for that

micci25 · 29/05/2008 15:18

lol my pancake mix is always trial and error dd1 gets up v early and demands pancakes come before my coffee so it is a matter of throwing things into a jug mixing and hoping for the best! she seems to enjoy them though

NotABanana · 29/05/2008 15:20

My nice foster father used to love dripping sandwiches. {yuk}

I see Lard but never know what to use it for, or indeed if I should with the children.
