Years ago when I was in the canary islands I would get small potatoes with mojo sauce. I've never seen it on menus since. I adored it and often thought about it.
I vaguely remember trying make it a long time ago but it wasn't the same. Anyway today I found a recipe that sounded promising. And it's spot on! Gave some roast new potatoes and mojo sauce to dh and he was blown away.

I'm so happy 😊
Downside is it has a lot of EVOO in it. But that's good for you right?

Please share!

Had my first taste in Gran Canaria 33 years ago... little wrinkly potatoes, with the red mojo on cocktail sticks 😁

I used to go to a restaurant near my Dad’s office as a child and I am continually on the hunt for a coleslaw that tastes like theirs did. Every time I try a new one I hope it might taste the same but it never has.

Have you tried to make your own?
My current recipe is incredibly easy:
Sweetheart cabbage chopped v finely / shredded.
Grated carrot (the sweeter the better)
Finely sliced white or red onion, which you’ve poured boiling water over and left for a few mins.
Drain & mix, adding whatever dressing & seasoning that you think is going to capture the memory best! I use Hellman’s mayo & sometimes chilli or lemon juice and a bit of salt.
You can add other raw veg of similar crisp texture, eg sliced spring onions.
Good luck!

I used to go to a buffet in town. They had an amazing pasta salad. The flavour was amazing. They closed and I an never replicate that taste.
A takeaway did Mexican chicken with rice. Was creamy and fabulous. They closed.
Also a Thai in town. The chef retired would probably be dead now? She did a Thai mixed grill. Never seen that on a Thai menu since? I had it with rice and Maggi garlic and ginger sauce. Also not available to buy now.

Thankfully there's lots of other delicious things in the world. Just some things have the edge.

Penne Pasta in the most delicious fresh tomato and all sorts of veg sauce from a tiny Italian cafe near my office in London in the 90s

Mackerel nigiri sushi

Salt cod and akee at a Caribbean restaurant in Canterbury

I spend too much time thinking about how to recreate these …

YumYa · 01/08/2025 18:40

@cnca00 I get that.
My dm wasn't a foodie at all. She had no interest really. She was more for plain food.
My dcs now adults and dh are all into food.

I can still remember the taste of my first Indian food. I was a teenager and my much older dsis and her partner bought one. I was hooked.

My experience exactly.
DM (and her mother) reluctantly dished up cottage pie, hot pot and sausage and mash. DM made “chilli” which was actually fried mince, with baked beans in and the tiniest dash of the Tabasco DDad kept for making food vaguely palatable.
Sadly, my food memories of DM’s cooking are Lean Cuisine frozen lasagna and Gino Ginelli ice cream (tell me you grew up in the 80s…).
For DGM… it’s apple and blackcurrant pie made with frozen ready-roll pastry, and no sugar.

On the occassions DDad cooked, it was mad fusion of his Caribbean and Scottish/NErn heritage. Rice n Peas, plantain and neeps (an actual dish of his!) and he worked out veggie haggis before plant based diets were commonplace. Mad, but tasty and veggie.

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads wow you had an eclectic array of food growing up!

There are some potato dauphinoise in Lyon somewhere that I swear I would leave my DP for. I think about them so often it’s untrue. Never ever been able to replicate.

so op I salute you and your mojo potatoes. May you be happy together forever!

When I was in college in the 90's a local deli had the most amazing coleslaw. Every single day I'd get a baguette with turkey, coleslaw and mayonnaise. I would kill for one of them right now.

Mine is very simple. My mum used to make soda bread, she also made gooseberry jam. I don't have a gooseberry bush and they never seem to be in shops, today I baked soda bread because I found gooseberry jam in Waitrose! Food heaven and memories of childhood and my late mum.

YumYa · 01/08/2025 20:40

@MissyB1 so glad you found the jam. Have thought of growing a gooseberry bush?

@BitOutOfPractice I wonder what they put in them that was so good? Maybe a herb?

I used to work in a Thai/Vietnamese fusion seafood restaurant and when I was poorly once, one of the chefs made me something off menu that she called rice soup. It was like a loose rice porridge with prawns and tofu in a rich broth. It was so delicious.

RumNotRun · 01/08/2025 21:40

When I worked at an office in about 2003-5, we used to often get lunch from Greggs. They did an Orleans chicken sandwich on thick white bread that was amazing. I mentioned it recently to some friends and they remember it too. I've never been able to recreate it.

I am bookmarking that mojo recipe, I love the Canary Islands mojo, mainly the green one though as I'm a bit of a spice wimp.

Good idea I need a gooseberry bush, that can be a nice project for me, I also want to grow rhubarb.

ooooohlala · 01/08/2025 22:05

My mum used to make a thing called Polynesian Chicken. It was chicken joints cooked in Worcestershire sauce (and other things), and served with a sauce involving blended pineapple chunks.

I’m sure it has nothing to do with Polynesian, we had a photocopy of a recipe handwritten by my aunt.

I tried to recreate it once, and it was… not good.

ShowOfHands · 01/08/2025 22:25

Birds gingerbread men. I think about them at least once a week. My Grandma used to buy them for me when I was a little girl and staying at her house. No other gingerbread men taste like them.

My nan had a gooseberry bush that never got pruned or tended. Just grew. You could sell your jam😊

@ShowOfHands I've not heard of them?

@YumYa there’s a tapas bar in Palma Majorca that does really great

I do love Grasmere gingerbread! My family buy it for me for special occasions and we always visit the shop when we're up that way.
