Years ago when I was in the canary islands I would get small potatoes with mojo sauce. I've never seen it on menus since. I adored it and often thought about it.
I vaguely remember trying make it a long time ago but it wasn't the same. Anyway today I found a recipe that sounded promising. And it's spot on! Gave some roast new potatoes and mojo sauce to dh and he was blown away.

I'm so happy 😊
Downside is it has a lot of EVOO in it. But that's good for you right?

@ShowOfHands that's good you've tried it. I thought of attempting making it but thought better of it.

I’ve had a gooseberry bush for a few years that has never produced fruit. I vaguely recall some plants only fruit in pairs. (That sounds like theee are m/f plants which doesn’t seem right??.)

Just mentioning it so you don’t have the same problem. On the other hand my garden might not suit gooseberries

My mother used to make rack of lamb with a marmalade and rosemary sauce. Sounds awful- was truly glorious.

My mum(bless her) embraced 60s cooking to a certain degree, loved an AustralianWW and Family Circle recipe. She had an electric fry pan that made huge batches of ...stuff for parties. But she made "risotto" pronounced ree sow ti, that would make an Italian despair. No risotto rice, no wine, tinned cream mushrooms. It should have been inedible bland mush, but god it was delicious. No way could I ever duplicate it, but it was comfort food par excellence.
When i discovered cooking and made chilli (well as good as chilli in suburban Australia in the 70s could be) and proper(ish) risotto, dad said "mmm it's lovely, but it's not like your mum's is it?

A friend at university had a friend who made a shredded raw cabbage salad that included a whole lemon, minus pips, chopped. So,the skin was left on the segments. I made it once, shortly after, but never wrote the recipe down. The friend of my friend was a Russian Jew and I have searched using both terms to no avail.

@Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride aw what a lovely memory.

I want the KFC recipe !

@RainbowSlimeLab I've been googling Israeli salads. They look delicious.

A very long time ago I visited a cafe in Garmisch-partenkirchen called The Mukkefukke (I kid you not!) and they had the Most Amazing Salad Dressing Ever but the chef/owner kept it secret. I would love to be able to replicate it!

YumYa · 02/08/2025 13:27

I'm glad you found the recipe, the sauce is called mojo picon and served with patatas arrugadas. It's always been a traditional dish in Canary Islands.

YumYa · 02/08/2025 13:29

@Alondra yes haven't seen it anywhere else? The one I made is exact. I'm over the moon.
Am working this afternoon so am leaving the rest until tomorrow or I'll stink the place out with garlic.

It's not easy to find the recipe in English. There are a couple of websites with the right recipe, but they are in Spanish.

Give me a shout if you want me to post them.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 02/08/2025 13:39

@YumYa, I had a pretty eclectic array of parents growing up! 😀

Alondra · 02/08/2025 13:49

My fondest memory food was pollo pepitoria, a chicken Spanish recipe I adore but lost for many years when my aunty died. Why I didn't ask for the recipe is still one of my biggest regrets.

I searched, asked friends and family, but all the recipes were never "it". Something was always missing until one day a Spanish friend in Australia (of all places) gave the key ingredient.

I went to heaven when I tasted it - it was exactly my aunt's chicken pepitoria.

Thanks but the one I used is great.

I worked at a warner village cinema in 2002. It was in Fulham. Nearby was a small SE Asian takeaway that sold the most amazing miso soup. It was cheap hot tasty and filling. Nothing has ever come close to it.

On the street opposite was a sandwich place that sold the best spaghetti bolognese ever. Absolutely the best I've ever tasted. I had it whenever I could afford it for lunch.

I have loooooaaaads of food memories. These are 2 😍 favourites.

Food memories! In Wyoming in 2000 and from an American fast food place they did a drink - Cherry Scotch and Soda (non-alcoholic) it was lush, would love to recreate it.

To add to this, I just tried to get ChatGPT to recreate the drink, but it wasn't that useful, so I have directly messaged the restaurant begging for the recipe. As I won't ever be returning back to Afton, Wyoming

Every older vegetarian in Newport, South Wales will probably remember the Soup at Hunky Dory on Charles Street back in the day! (1990s). It was so good, served with a hunk of bread and cheese.
Lovely family atmosphere too and amazing salads. I still miss it.
Oh and Quorn Tikka sandwiches from Charlie’s on Skinner Street, though DW votes for the Brie, Mustard and Jam on doorstep bread from the Market.
I worked in the Liver Building on Pier Head in Liverpool in the tax office in the 1970s. There was a tiny sandwich shop tucked away in one of the nearby side streets that made the best cheese and onion filling I have ever eaten.
Grated cheese, grated white onion, mayonnaise and some secret ingredient that I have never discovered.😳
50 years on I can still taste it!

Food evokes so many memories doesn’t it? We often reminisce about meals, both home cooked and at cafes and restaurants.

thank you OP for sharing your delight at recreating that delicious sauce. I can make Quorn Tikka sandwiches but as I can no longer eat gluten it’s just not the same.
😢

@YumYa Thanks so much for this post and for adding the recipe. My potatoes are almost done, and I've made the sauce, which is amazing!.

My food memory, and craving, is for a Grubbs (of Brighton/Hove) chilli burger - the recipe for the chilli sauce seems to be unobtainable - I've asked in numerous Brighton-based (and other) forums (fora?). Someone once replied and told me they'd worked at Grubbs, and that the recipe was actually very simple - and then they vanished without sharing the secret! Very frustrating. So, if by chance anyone has worked in Grubbs in the past, and knows how to make their chilli sauce - please let me know - I'm not in the UK any more so can't even visit the actual place to indulge my craving!

CountryQueen · 02/08/2025 16:52

You need to do the potatoes in a lot of salt!

OhDorWheresthesalad · 02/08/2025 17:09

@IamEarthymama my Newport food fave was cheese and pineapple toasties in The Pot in the arcade opposite the market. Used to be followed by a very expensive mooch around the much missed Serendipity.
