stupid question about bicarb of soda

OK - quick responses needed as midway through making a cake - can I use bicarb of soda 'cleaner' in a cake? All the ingredients on the box say is "sodium bicarbonate" but I just worry. Particularly when the box says things like "safe for use in septic tanks".

I have cleaned with a little tub of bicarb that I used for baking.

Surely it is the same?!!

Or am I going to poison us all?

erm, what form is the cleaner in? Is it just a white powder like normal baking soda?

thegrowlygus · 26/05/2008 14:55

yep - just says "bicarbonate of soda cleaner". It is Tesco naturally range.
The ingredients just say 'sodium bicarbonate'

And there is a web address that says the ingredients are "sodium hydrogen carbonate" (which is bicarb of soda).

So that must be all it is right? They don't chuck in a load of something else?!

Or shall O just bung in some extra baking powder and cross my fingers?!

personally I wouldn't. The food bicarb will be the same stuff, but the cleaner bicarb will prob have been processed in a different factory - so may be contaminated with other cleaning products.

I'd go with colander. It seemed wrong, but wasn't sure why, but that makes sense. Something sold as cleaner won't have to be as pure/safe as something sold as food.

That is what we were figuring. But it doesn't say "not for consumption" on it which you would've though it would, wouldn't you?!

So - extra baking powder?! Or will I then end up with banana cake escaping from the kitchen?

chucked in some extra baking powder and all turned out well!
