Filling for b-day cake

I normally make cream and fruit filled b-day cakes which is fine when covering the cake in cream, but I am making an iced cake for the 1st time for dd's 2nd birthday and want a similar filling, nothing too sweet or sickly.

Any ideas?

Chocolate ganache or swiss buttercream (flavoured as you want it).

what is swiss butter cream?

4 large egg whites
8oz sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
16ozs unsalted butter, at room temperature, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

In the top of a double boiler set over simmering water, whisk together the egg whites, sugar, salt, and cream of tartar. Continue whisking until the mixture becomes too hot to touch comfortably, 7 to 10 minutes.

Transfer the mixture to the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a whisk attachment. Beat on, medium-high speed until the egg whites hold a stiff peak, about 8 minutes. Add the-butter, one or two pieces at a time, beating after each addition until incorporated. Beat in the vanilla. Use at room temperature

It is nice and light and less sweet than frosting made with icing sugar and butter.

I do jam and butter cream (the sickly frosting one, notes COV's superior recipe!), or just jam, or nutella (on the basis I can justify buying a jar then having the rest of it on toast!)

cov- can you make it different flavours and would it go with strawberry jam?

Can flavour it in a load of different ways. TBH if using jam I would just use a whipped cream filling. Flavoured buttercream on its own doesn't really need the jam.
