Breakfast for a crowd that doesn’t involve ‘full-English ingredients’

Looking for breakfast ideas for a largish group (c 16 poss 20 people).

We will already have had full English or a variation on that the first two mornings so I don’t want to repeat that or make anything involving eggs, bacon or sausage (although there will no doubt be leftovers if anyone really wants that again). Baked beans/mushrooms will also be included in the full English.

We could have a selection of cereal, maybe Bircher muesli, fruit, croissants/Danish pastries/muffins etc. I think most people would be happy with that so am not at a loss. I just thought I’d ask on here as I know there are always brilliant ideas I haven’t thought of.

Thank you.

Shaksuka. That does involve eggs though. You could just use feta.

Comedycook · 15/04/2025 15:37

Pancakes with various toppings?

Smoked salmon, bagels and scrambled eggs?

Comedycook · 15/04/2025 15:43

Oh sorry just saw you'd rather no eggs...then maybe smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels

Sailead · 15/04/2025 15:44

I can’t stomach anything vaguely sweet for breakfast so I’d probably be happy with sliced meats and cheese. I know you said no eggs but a boiled egg as well would be lovely

Comedycook · 15/04/2025 15:45

You could make french toast but in a huge dish baked in the oven served with a berry compote and creme fraiche

ErrolTheDragon · 15/04/2025 15:46

Cereal and pastries are ok but a bit too carby for some people - I’d do some good Greek yogurt, fruit and nuts as well.

Movinghouseatlast · 15/04/2025 15:47

A strata, which is a savoury bread and butter pudding really, with cheese. Nigella has a recioe.

OMGitsnotgood · 15/04/2025 15:48

@Comedycookyes thank you for that idea, I’d added that to my list after your initial suggestion!

Kedgeree? With Greek yogurt and berries and compote as well, and some croissants too

OMGitsnotgood · 15/04/2025 15:55

I would love kedgeree @Blackcordoroysbut I’m not sure how well that would go down with this group. Could ask ahead I guess.

My DH would struggle with the pastries, croissants, cereals etc. as he doesn't do sweet stuff at all at breakfast.

I know you said no eggs but a big shakshuka would be a nice option and could be made in advance and served with crusty bread.

Or a big kedgeree? Cheese / sliced meats? Pâté?

Personally I'd love lots of smoked salmon, mackerel, rye bread, avocado, cucumber and tomatoes but appreciate it's not everyone's taste at breakfast.

BreadInCaptivity · 15/04/2025 15:59

I’d be very happy with a huge pan of porridge and a variety of different topping such as honey, fruit compote, fresh fruits, jam.

I’d also probably buy some of the pre-made pastry croissant/pain au chocolate packs you can get in the chiller cabinet and you just assemble and whack in the oven with some lush French butter (and the jams you have from the porridge).

I doubt any adult of child would turn their nose up at both of these and most may have some of each.

Make sure there is lots of good coffee and tea and (chocolate) milk for the children.

Edit to add: maybe some sourdough toast with avocado and sliced tomatoes with a drizzle of good olive oil for those who don’t like sweeter breakfast.

AmateurNoun · 15/04/2025 16:02

Big vat of porridge with various toppings people can add?

TaliaTalia · 15/04/2025 16:04

I love a shakshuka, if I’m not feeling eggs I do it with halloumi (sometimes feta but prefer halloumi). If I want it a bit more filling I add mixed beans too.

Hemlocked · 15/04/2025 16:05

Continental breakfast buffet style so ppl can pick and choose what they want. Toast, cereals, fruit salad, tea, yoghurt, juices, different milks, croissants/pastries, cheese and ham perhaps, boiled eggs, porridge with a few toppings.

OMGitsnotgood · 15/04/2025 16:07

Yes it’s hard to please everyone @RomainingCalm!

i do like the idea of something like a strata or a savoury bread and butter pudding - I know they contain eggs but different enough to fried/scrambled eggs we’ll have had the previous days. and easier to make for a crowd than pancakes (which I love for breakfast!) .

We will no doubt have meats and cheeses left over from lunches the previous two days so could serve those, smoked salmon and a selection of breads/croissants:bagels. Plus fruit salad, yoghurt, cereals as an alternative.

I can make sure we have enough eggs for anyone fancying a boiled egg.

I think the plan is coming together, thanks al

More suggestions while I was writing my last post, thank you. I wondered about porridge but wasn’t sure how popular it would be. I can take oats with me and ask if anyone wants it.

I make spinach and feta pancakes.
You just make Delia pancake batter, then crumble in feta and chopped spring onions and fresh herbs, and a bit of grated parmesan.
They make really nice small pancakes, so three to a pan. If you use self raising flour it makes them even fluffier.

MissDoubleU · 15/04/2025 16:15

Pancakes, waffles, French toast and fruit.

Sweet for breakfast is my favourite but these can be made with savoury alternatives. It’s a welcome change from heavy sausage and bacon if you’re done that twice already, otherwise I’d say a classic continental, help-yourself affair. Danish, croissants, bagels, Cheeses and hams, fruit. Option of toast, jams/spreads.

I don’t think breakfast should ever have to be thought about too hard.

WellyBellyBoo · 15/04/2025 16:21

Google Swedish breakfast. Bread/crackers with ham, salami and cheese, yoghurt and muesli ,fruit, and cinnamon buns for those that want something sweet. I love a Swedish hotel breakfast!

OMGitsnotgood · 15/04/2025 16:23

I don’t think breakfast should ever have to be thought about too hard.

Generally I’d agree but this will be the last meal of the long weekend together and we will probably sit around the breakfast table before we head home late morning.

Bagels (perhaps a couple of different flavours, cinnamon, onion?) , cream cheese, strawberries, blueberries, greek yoghurt and my favourite granola is Rollagranola - not sure many shops stock it but I buy it from their website, it's delicious!

Perhaps blueberry or banana muffins?

My preference would be Scandinavian style rye bread, rollmops, smoked salmon, ham, slices of cheese, cucumber etc, I'm not keen on sweet breakfasts. But I know many prefer them, so maybe add in some choices from pastries, pancakes, Greek yogurt or porridge and berries. I think choice is the main thing, rather than one central dish which some might not like (I'd rather go without than eat any variation of bread and butter pudding).
