Tinned potatoes

I ordered some tinned new potatoes by mistake! Does anyone have a recipe for Spanish omelette that uses them? Or any other ways I can use them up?

I always have them in my cupboard as they're great to put through soups to make it thicker. I always blend my soup. I also like to put them in the air fryer. They go nice and crispy!

They remind me of my Grandad - he’d always have tinned potatoes, tinned peas and a Fray Bentos pie for his Saturday dinner. Maybe do that? (Or not 😁).

Whack on smoked paprika and olive oil in the airfryer, lemon mayo on top!

Corned beef hash ?

TyneTeas · 03/04/2025 18:07

Ooh fried tinned potatoes, I am right back at my Gran's

I've always got a can in the cupboard.
They're great for sauté as they don't need pre-boiling.
Do give them a good rinse first.

Thanks Plump, I'm actually the only person in the world who doesn't have an air fryer but I love your soup hack! In a soup emergency, I have been known to use Smash...

Air fry them with some butter garlic salt pepper until crispy.

Plump82 · 03/04/2025 20:25

I've used smash as well! My favourite 10 min soup is tinned potatoes, frozen broccoli, plenty of stock boiled and blended!

They're handy to have in, I used to hate them when I was a wee girl but I tried the growers harvest brand a few years ago and once well rinsed they are absolutely fine. You can either deep fry or air fry them, or you can cut into thick slices and cook in a frying pan or wok with butter, smoked bacon and peppers , sprinkle grated cheese on top when serving. I like to add them to the pot when I'm using the slow cooker for a casserole /stew type dish as well.

To answer your original question we quite often had my version of Spanish omelette in lockdown. No recipe but I fried up some onion & cubed tinned potatoes & added eggs. Simple! I'm sure you could add other things too. Lovely with some green salad & some nice bread. I think I probably used to do 5 eggs between 3 of us.

TheLadyIsAVamp · 03/04/2025 20:43

I actually prefer them in things like stews and curries, they hold their shape better and hold up well to slow cooking.

AdaColeman · 03/04/2025 21:11

Slice them to make a quick version of Polish potato salad, mustard mayonnaise, chopped gherkins, chopped ham or sausage, chopped spring onion, hard boiled eggs if liked.

Or for something different, change the meat element to fish such as rollmop herrings, smoked mackerel fillets or smoked trout flakes.

Sautéed whole or sliced, they're a quick accompaniment to almost anything! They make a good hotpot topping too, as they hold their shape.

I find they taste odd but OH loves them and he also puts them in the airfryer

AdoraBell · 03/04/2025 21:16

The soup seems good. Maybe fry them.

Rosequart · 03/04/2025 21:19

Nadiya has a recipe for them using marmalade but it didn’t turn out well for me

SoOxon · 03/04/2025 21:23

I’m tempted now! no one has said which brand? which is the best?

Gundogday · 03/04/2025 21:26

We always have a can in the cupboard. Dh has them in place of fresh potatoes ( not all the time).

slowgraffiti · 03/04/2025 21:27

I fry them with peppers, onion, paprika, chilli flakes and halloumi chunks (or you could use chorizo) then top with a poached egg. Best easy dinner.

AlphabetBird · 03/04/2025 21:31

I make an omelette with them by frying them sliced with onion for a bit, then adding a load of eggs, then some frozen peas, then when it’s nearly set some feta and mint if there’s any lying around. It’s too tricky to flip but you could grill it I guess on top.

Im not sure it’s a Spanish omelette, but it’s Spanish-ish.

Our local Indian restaurant
Really highly rated and always full told me they always use tinned potatoes for their bombay potatoes after I asked how they get them so perfect and not fall apart.

And their bombay potatoes are delicious.

Goodwitch9 · 04/04/2025 12:41

Wow, so many great ideas, thanks everyone!

You can just roast them in the oven (you don't need an air fryer). Make sure to dry them thoroughly first though.
