What about the sorting hat or Hermione's cat? I'm a rubbish cake maker, so don't know how easy they would be.

A spell book should be easy, just a square sponge, white icing on the top, brown around the edges, gold cord down the middle and I tink you can buy pens that write with edible ink.

Thanks all good ideas. Not sure how to execute them though. She would love a quiddich ball/snitch.Round ball cake - how do I do that?
Do I cut the wings from another sponge? Am a real novice - can bake but no real experience of shaped birthday cakes.

we did hp cake as follows: victoria sandwich with nice raspberry jam and butter cream (not too gloppy) with rolled white fondant icing. Then used food die to 'paint" a simple sorting hat made out of more rolled fondant (basically edible playdough) Then used pens/ marker for writing on icing to put names of 4 houses around hat and tied red and gold (gryffindor) ribbon around cake... a great success and very simple.

Thanks pofaced that is a good idea.
