Will you please look at this recipe? It says 140 C which I think is GAS 1 - sounds a bit low but I may be wrong

dunno...sounds a bit low but then again, I remember making a carrot cake with oil in the recipe and I think the temp was lower.

The next recipe says 160C for a normal choc cake that I would normally put in the oven at 175/180C so I would try it at 160C and see what happens.

160 isn't too low for nearly 1 hour's cooking.

Gas Mark 1 is 270F, 140C.

So you're right.

It's having quite a long time in the oven, though, so is probably correct.

It's that low so that it rises slowly. Makes it all fluffy and cooked in the middle then.
