Five year old frozen goose

DH discovered a freezer in the garage today. We apparently filled it with food in the first lockdown. Bagels, beef mince, chicken, and for some reason we also decided to freeze a gigantic goose. I have no recollection of this but there it is. What on earth do we do with it? Will it be revolting? DH marched proudly into the kitchen with it today but I made him march right back to the garage with it so we can make a plan. I'm not even convinced it will fit in the oven. We could maybe cook it outside in the smoker?

Nope, it will be grim, as would any food that has been sat in the freezer for 5 years. Feed it to your cats,if you don’t have cats get some to avoid wasting the goose.

FusionChefGeoff · 11/01/2025 20:43

Did you drink a LOT over lockdown??!?!

How the hell have you both forgotten about a freezer?! And a massive goose!

Or do you live in eg Downton Abbey so your garage is rather large?!

msmatcha · 11/01/2025 20:43

Hmmmm. It seems a shame to waste it but I'm probably inclined to agree. The bagels are sitting hopefully next to the toaster...

Not got cats.

And don't geese really smell when you cook them?

I'd bin everything. 5 years is a long time in a freezer. And during that time if you forgot about a whole freezer, you have probably forgotten if there were any power cuts or if someone unplugged it and plugged it back in again etc.

Gin and tonics at with the Covid news like everyone else... but yes I'm surprised I forgot an entire freezer too. I do remember buying a catering slab of chickpeas which we still have.

I was thinking about power cuts. We have definitely had a few in the past five years but none that lasted overnight so the goose wouldn't have defrosted. And it's a decent freezer (according to DH - I still haven't ventured out to see it). But still... five years. Hard to bin food but yes we probably should.

Your lock down sounds wild

Kaminari · 11/01/2025 20:50

Smoked goose on bagels.
That is the most MN thing I've ever seen! 😂

Bignanna · 11/01/2025 20:52

Couldn't help thinking of a potential Wallace and Gromit sketch involving a giant frozen goose that comes to life!

Ohthatsabitshit · 11/01/2025 20:52

Roast the goose, slather it in teriyaki sauce when it’s cooked and sizzle it a bit more. Cut the meat off, make pho with the bones, stick meat, noodles, green veg, in a bowl and enjoy.

heldinadream · 11/01/2025 20:53

What's a slab of chickpeas?
For me chickpeas come either loose dried in bags, or tins.

I regularly eat old freezer stuff. Sometimes it's fine! I'm not dead anyway. But a whole goose! Hmm... not sure. 😂

SnakesAndArrows · 11/01/2025 20:53

Well it won’t be dangerous, but it might smell bad, be tough and nasty, and therefore a waste of a hot oven. Only you can weight up those pros and cons.

If I was prepared to eat goose, which I am not, I would cook it and see.

MrsKwazi · 11/01/2025 20:54

Put it outside for the fox.
How did you forget a freezer full of food? And the elec bill for it? Such a waste :(

mitogoshigg · 11/01/2025 20:56

Will be fine Grin. I've eaten older!

Roast it, delicious, leftovers combine with pork mince for a tasty pie filling

Oh my giddy Aunt!
You've just reminded me, my Mum put a couple of rabbits in the meat safe, when rationing finished in the 1950's.

It's in the garage now (I didn't like to get rid of it when she passed over) I'm going to pop out in the morning and fish them out, I know they're a bit old but in a curry I reckon they will be passable.

Nollybolly6 · 11/01/2025 21:01

Nah I’m not eating any meat that’s been in a freezer over a year.

im not eating anything that’s been in a freezer 5 years including bagels. Yuck

A slab of about 24 tins. Think I used maybe 2.

I cannot for the life of me understand how you could forget a whole freezer full of food, but putting that to one side I'm with the poster who said on here years ago that for her time stood still when she put things in the freezer. I don't have anything in my freezer that's 5 years old but things are often in there for many months, sometimes over a year. Maybe we're just not very fussy.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/01/2025 21:19

PS I feel there's no point worrying about wasting fuel on heating your oven given that you've not noticed the cost of running the freezer for 5 years.

HappyNewFeckingYear · 11/01/2025 21:23

I'd be tempted to poach the goose and then give it a blast in a hot oven. I'm sure my father's stock pot had items in it over 5 years old.

I actually considered poaching it! But have no gigantic pots.

I know it's awful to forget a whole freezer but it is in a separate outbuilding which is mostly powered by solar panels. Still. I know. Can I blame menopause?

You have never seen this freezer? That belongs to you and which you have owned for at least 5 years? Are you sure there is actually a goose in there or is your DH making this up?
