Five year old frozen goose

msmatcha · 11/01/2025 20:32

DH discovered a freezer in the garage today. We apparently filled it with food in the first lockdown. Bagels, beef mince, chicken, and for some reason we also decided to freeze a gigantic goose. I have no recollection of this but there it is. What on earth do we do with it? Will it be revolting? DH marched proudly into the kitchen with it today but I made him march right back to the garage with it so we can make a plan. I'm not even convinced it will fit in the oven. We could maybe cook it outside in the smoker?

Ugh I bet it would absolutely honk Envy

(see what I did there?)

@InStarbucksRehab of course people eat Goose, it's very tasty. People also eat Quail, partridge, Guinea fowl, pigeon, duck, woodcock, pheasant...pretty much all a domesticated and semi domesticated birds

Bobbly I will venture out tomorrow and visit the freezer. I have seen the massive goose and the bagels.

This was a debate on capital radio a couple of years ago .. I obviously don’t remember all the details but I do remember someone who worked in a lab who said she wouldn’t the monocular structure would have changed .

MaggieBsBoat · 11/01/2025 21:51

Oh we spent November and December eating our Covid frozen food in order to make room for Christmas stuff as we hosted this year. Most of it was ok. Some of the casseroles I couldn’t actually tell what was in them…

Mum2jenny · 11/01/2025 21:53

I’ve just recently binned chicken in my old freezer that was dated 2020 and was bought in the lockdown.
I couldn’t justify eating it and didn’t want to feed very old meat to my dog.

Ophy83 · 11/01/2025 21:54

I'm surprised people are shocked at eating goose! It's delicious, like duck but nicer. It is a traditional Christmas dinner meat.

I wouldn't eat anything that's been in the freezer for 5 years however! I agree with the suggestion to leave it for the fox

Titsywoo · 11/01/2025 21:58

How big is your garage that you haven't noticed a massive freezer it in for the last 3 years? Or is it so untidy that it was covered in crap?

creamsnugjumper · 11/01/2025 21:59

Omg this reminded me of a friend of mine who forgot she owned some woodland on her estate, "oh you'll never guess what I remembered we have an acre here.."

creamsnugjumper · 11/01/2025 22:01

Actually nelly is that you? She has outbuildings scattered around, and is likely to buy a goose!

DancefloorAcrobatics · 11/01/2025 22:02

Goose Jalfrezi and some loperamide for afters, you'll be fine!

Gowlett · 11/01/2025 22:03

Thought were asking about a five year old eating goose.
Mine would rather chicken nuggets!

This made me laugh out loud 😂😂

marylou25 · 11/01/2025 22:13

I have eaten nearly 5 yr old cake from a freezer, it was still delicious, you'd never know BUT I knew for a fact that the freezer had never defrosted and re-froze over that time. That would be my main concern with meat especially, mind you had it been thawed long enough to go off you'll know when it thaws again! Those bagels will surely be suffering freezer burn at this stage no matter how well they were wrapped, won't kill you but probably won't taste nice.

I laughed more than I should at that 😂

murasaki · 11/01/2025 22:22

I love this. Forgetting a whole freezer is epic.

TianasBayou · 11/01/2025 22:36

The govt did cancel Christmas at a days notice during lockdown so maybe you were supposed to be hosting, and were so traumatised by the wasted goose, you blanked it out?

bluesatin · 11/01/2025 22:42

If it hasn't defrosted and refrozen it probably won't kill you, but may be rather tasteless. My mother was a cook in WW2, around 1940... She said they had consignments of frozen meat dated 1927 to feed the troops!

SnowballAndTrifle · 11/01/2025 23:15

Goose has a weird tangy taste at the best of times, I can't imagine it tasting much worse after a stint in the freezer.

bluejelly · 12/01/2025 03:17

I would defrost it and see if it smells. If not, crack on

Monty27 · 12/01/2025 03:27

@msmatcha mind you don't fall into that freezer. You won't be found for 5 years. You might still be fresh though 🤣 🤣 🤣

CamelsForChristmas · 12/01/2025 03:36

I think you must be related to my DH.

He ate a pot of honey last year his mother made when she kept hives. It had been in our larder a while- he bought the house in 1997, she died in 2001 and she had not actually kept hives since the 1970s.

He'd totally eat that goose were he not a vegetarian.

I remember that Christmas- we were supposed to be joining three other families somewhere then ended up at home and on zoom with friends and it was unexpectedly lovely. So the goose wasn't from then... but why on earth did we buy a humongous goose and then freeze it? Who does that?
