Gluten Free treats

I have a gluten-free colleague. At work we bring treats in over Christmas. Can anyone point me in the direction of either some lovely shop gluten free treats or a recipe? Thanks

Sainsbury and waitrose chocolate brownies are good, and the recipe on the back of a packet of Freee gluten free plain flour is very reliable.

junebirthdaygirl · 25/11/2024 16:54

I was coming on to say brownies. Lots of recipes for gluten free ones online. Also Quality Street sweets are gluten free!

As a coeliac, I would prefer shop bought rather than homemade - I would worry that there could be some accidental cross contamination in your kitchen.

Could you give me some examples of your favourite shop bought ones? Thank you

Macaron are usually gluten free (check the packet) and definitely a treat.

Phineyj · 25/11/2024 17:06

Waitrose or M&S

immunityquestions · 25/11/2024 17:08

schar do nice biscuits

Phineyj · 25/11/2024 17:08

M&S gluten free coffee and walnut cake is yummy.

Waitrose do individually wrapped gluten free madeleines which are nice.

Keep the stuff in its original packaging.

Don't be offended if she doesn't want it though. Getting glutened is no joke.

QueryA · 25/11/2024 17:11

M&S do nice chocolate frosted cake bars. And at this time of year do gluten free mince pies. Most large supermarkets will have a free from section with a selection of treats. They are pricey though! Macaroons (crimbles) are nice for those who like coconut - my boys don’t. They like chocolate best. Galaxy is GF 😋

LivLuna · 25/11/2024 17:14

As a coeliac I would prefer shop bought but please not brownies as that seems to be the go to choice for all coeliacs. There is an extensive choice of gluten free treats in most supermarkets. Sainsbury's are my favourite and I would choose chocolate tiffin or Christmas cake slices personally.

DogInATent · 25/11/2024 17:18

Anything that's not a brownie. Nothing says "default gluten-free choice" quite like a brownie. Over ten years as a coeliac and it can be a struggle to make the appreciative face for a brownie. And as a PP suggested, as a coeliac if I don't trust you (and that's generally a very short list for most coeliacs) I need to see the packet unopened - I don't want to be worrying about how much/little you understand about gluten it's effects and where it's found.

M&S Made Without Wheat Rocky Road Mini Bites are good, but don't expect the receiver to share!

Personally, a GF pork pie would be more of a treat than something sweet! (available from Sainsbury, and larger M&S Food Halls).

WhamFantastic · 25/11/2024 17:29

These are incredible

DrCoconut · 25/11/2024 17:33

The little apple pies (Mr Kipling dupe) from Tesco are good. Or there's mince pies everywhere if the person likes them. Schar Jaffa cakes are good and. The Asda frozen donuts (but you'd have to be very careful about cc when cooking). I'd agree about brownies being a default choice and possibly bringing bought items unless you're sure you really know what you're doing with GF.

WhamFantastic · 25/11/2024 17:34

Photo upload fail sorry!

They are M&S tubs of chocolate crispy caramel mini bites

Whatamitodonow · 25/11/2024 17:36

We have found co-op has the best range and quality in their “free from” range.

AnnPerkins · 25/11/2024 17:36

Glutenfreecuppatea.com lists all the supermarkets’ GF Christmas ranges, plus everyday sweets, chocolates, cakes, snacks etc.

Plump82 · 25/11/2024 17:37

My FIL is coeliac and says it's always the same old thing for sweet treats, so Crimbles and dry brownies. I cant comment as I don't try them but what I do know he enjoys are Florentines. I get him Tesco ones, the M&S ones aren't suitable.

bluegreygreen · 25/11/2024 17:37

Becky Excell does a great review of which supermarket Christmas treats are gluten-free (she includes the standard ones as well as the 'official' free from ones - i.e which seasonal crisps and snacks are naturally GF). She updates through the season as new ones come out.

Check out the page on her site for your local oneBecky Excell Christmas products

These are DH’s favourite. They are insanely sweet though.

DogInATent · 25/11/2024 17:38

And please, please remember not to plate up gluten-free items with everything else.

In a workplace environment it really does show understanding to leave the items wrapped and in the packaging. It will not be taken as well-meaning and considerate if they're removed from the packet and artfully arranged on a plate with a sprig of holly and a drizzle of icing sugar just to show you're including them.

I came here to say the same!

frogspawn15 · 25/11/2024 17:40

Tesco do an amazing Enrobed Chocolate and Orange biscuit.

M&S and co op both have mince pies at the mo, delicious. Also M&S shortbread biscuits.

Schar do a good Kinder Bueno dupe, it's called Melto.

I found a massive Ferrero Rocher in Lidl this week, gluten free (not marked as gf, it just is)

Try to avoid brownies and lemon/orange polenta cake as they are usually the only gf options in most cafes. Also definitely avoid mrs crimbles coconut macaroons, I don't think I could force another one down if I tried 😂

Single-serving packet too.. 😅

Defiantlynot41 · 25/11/2024 17:44

Nairns gluten free biscuits are nice and come in small packs within the box, and the madeleines mentioned by a PP.

Most things from M&S Made Without range are nice, especially the Coffee and Walnut cake or Victoria sponge (the chocolate cake is not nice, nor are the danish pastries)

Pre packaged things are best unless you are really clued up about cross contamination, and if you go for a large sponge cake to be sliced up, it needs to go on a separate plate and be kept well away from anything containing gluten, with a separate knife for slicing which is not used for the normal stuff, and ideally some kind of warning to people not to handle the cake if they have handled gluten.

Personally I'd love a GF sausage roll although I've not found any good ones yet.

Crisps and nuts can be ok but check the labels (salted ones only, most of the flavours are not ok), and same with chocolates, need to check labels for Barley, Rye, Oats or Wheat which all contain gluten.

DogInATent · 25/11/2024 17:45

@FixingStuff & @junebirthdaygirl are you coeliacs?
Only wondering, because those of us that have said we are have all been firmly in the NAFBC (Not Another F Brownie Camp) and very much against home baking by work colleagues,
