Gluten Free treats

I have a gluten-free colleague. At work we bring treats in over Christmas. Can anyone point me in the direction of either some lovely shop gluten free treats or a recipe? Thanks

Another Coeliac here! Thanks for thinking of her! And echoing everyone saying please not another damn brownie.

Agree with keeping it in its original wrapper so she can be sure it’s safe.

I second the M&S stuff, the coffee cakes and carrot cakes and florentines are really nice.

Do take a look at Becky Excell as mentioned a few times above, she does a great run down of all the supermarket GF ranges at this time of year.

nonamehere · 25/11/2024 17:45

Schar Lebkuchen are lovely, but a bit pricy! Available in Morrisons.

EmotionalSupportBiscuit · 25/11/2024 17:48

@DogInATent makes a very good point about including something savoury.

Cakes and biscuits are everywhere and we often miss out on crackers (with a bit of cheese kept separate so uncontaminated for us), or you can get GF falafel and quiches in the chilled aisles at Waitrose, I’ve not looked elsewhere for chilled stuff.

cheapskatemum · 25/11/2024 17:49

@AnnPerkins everything gluten free is ridiculously sweet! I always say they replace the wheat with more sugar.

True. Which doesn’t bother DH luckily!

Scampuss · 25/11/2024 17:58

Wheat allergy here and agree with others about shop bought only and keep in packaging/separately please.

M&S mince pies are lovely this year. For biscuits Schar's spekulatis are a nice seasonal treat.

Whilst I mostly agree on avoiding brownies, I'd not say no these from M&S which are accidentally GF!

Sainsbury and waitrose chocolate brownies are good, and the recipe on the back of a packet of Freee gluten free plain flour is very reliable.

Brownies… 🙈 as a long time diagnosed Coeliac if I never see another brownie again it will be too soon!

Frankley · 25/11/2024 18:19

The savoury biscuit l like best is M and S Made without Gluten free Cheese crackers.
Crispy and slightly salty. I have found that non-Coeliac relatives think they are good too

Frankley · 25/11/2024 18:37

Scampuss I've just looked at those brownies. I wonder why it doesn't say Gluten free on the packet. I've just added them to my next Ocado order, they look good.
Off topic, My local cafe used to put a label by cakes that are Gluten free but have stopped doing it lately as the owner says people who don't require Gluten free avoid buying them.
I also found that a pub has stopped putting what meals are gf on the menu for the same reason.

M&S gluten free coffee and walnut cake is yummy.

Waitrose do individually wrapped gluten free madeleines which are nice.

Keep the stuff in its original packaging.

Don't be offended if she doesn't want it though. Getting glutened is no joke.

I second the M&S coffee and walnut cake, and keep it in the packet. Thank you for being a considerate colleague. 😊

notapizzaeater · 25/11/2024 18:51

Sainsbury’s do nice gf quiche if you wanted savoury.

Another 'not a bloody brownie' family here !

LadyGabriella · 25/11/2024 19:03

These are really great

They do usually have the crossed grain symbol on the front.

Also has anyone else tried the Dr Oetker gluten free mozzarella pizza? It’s fantastic. I add extra cheese and toppings.

CrepuscularCritter · 25/11/2024 19:19

Great suggestions above, many of which I have tried...and the Tesco chocolate orange biscuits are my favourite.

Asda do a box of GF stollen which is really good, and much lighter than most gluten containing stollen. Morrisons iced fruitcake bars (pack of 5) are also good.

NameChange374 · 25/11/2024 19:21

Around Christmas time, I like the Schar Lebkuchen - most big supermarkets will carry them - or florentines (not necessarily labelled as gluten free, but most will be).
But the absolute pinnacle of treats would be a stroopwaffel. They are available online but almost impossible to find in a shop so most GF people rarely get to have them.
(Unlike brownies, which coffee shops regularly suggest to me at lunch time when I ask if they have any GF options for lunch. Because coeliacs don't require any actual nutrition or substance in their meals 🙄)

NameChange374 · 25/11/2024 19:21

Also, thanks OP for this thread. My shopping list just got a whole lot longer 😁

So true! Would happily eat those Schar Lebkuchen for lunch, mind you 😆😆

Haven't tried these - thanks for the recommendation!

In return - White Rabbit pizzas (found in Sainsburys) are great, and are now our default GF pizza

They have the Dr Oetker in Sainsbury’s, in the free from freezer section.

Will try White Rabbit, thanks!

Pinksmyfavoritecolour · 25/11/2024 20:57

Waitrose are doing gluten free mince pies, Christmas pudding and stollens. I've not tried them though, just purchased for others.
The Tesco cherry bakewells are lovely, can't tell the difference from non gluten free.

LadyGabriella · 25/11/2024 21:02

Can anyone verify whether the M&S made without wheat mince pies are any good?

They are exceptional, by any standard, with really lovely buttery short pastry.

Thanks. Was looking at them the other day but didn’t want to risk it as they’re a bit pricey. Will pick up a pack next time I’m there.
