Gluten Free treats

I have a gluten-free colleague. At work we bring treats in over Christmas. Can anyone point me in the direction of either some lovely shop gluten free treats or a recipe? Thanks

Keeping track of some of these recommendations, I only have a fairly pitiful Tesco selection as I live in the sticks but going to visit London soon and I’m going to stock up on some of the other supermarket gf offerings suggested!

I agree that M and S mince pies are good this year.

Defiantlynot41 · 25/11/2024 21:23

Oh, and these, they're really nice

A bit plainer and less treaty than most of the things mentioned here, but the M&S and Waitrose gluten free hot cross buns are both very good.

bluegreygreen · 25/11/2024 21:46

M&S mince pies are usually good (we have a box unopened as yet) but we have had Waitrose ones for the first time this year and they were very good (if a bit more citrus-y in flavour than is traditional)

Borough 22 doughnuts

Around Christmas time, I like the Schar Lebkuchen - most big supermarkets will carry them - or florentines (not necessarily labelled as gluten free, but most will be).
But the absolute pinnacle of treats would be a stroopwaffel. They are available online but almost impossible to find in a shop so most GF people rarely get to have them.
(Unlike brownies, which coffee shops regularly suggest to me at lunch time when I ask if they have any GF options for lunch. Because coeliacs don't require any actual nutrition or substance in their meals 🙄)

There are GF stroopwaffels?? Oh wow that would be amazing
do you recommend anywhere in particular for buying them online ?

mitogoshigg · 25/11/2024 21:53

Macaroons are gluten free usually, I like the chocolate coated ones. Sainsburys have a good gluten free and vegan chocolate cake. All the larger supermarkets carry free from foods these days and there's best buy information. Do check if they have any other dietary restrictions or preferences, especially if they are the only gf person

These are really good...Waitrose milk and gluten free Christmas cake slices

GF stroopwaffels???

choirmumoftwo · 25/11/2024 22:21

Can I ask where you're based OP? There are a couple of excellent gluten free bakeries in the North East and other posters may be able to recommend similar in other areas. It's such a treat for coeliacs to have 'home baked' goods they can be 100% confident about.

DogInATent · 25/11/2024 17:45

@FixingStuff & @junebirthdaygirl are you coeliacs?
Only wondering, because those of us that have said we are have all been firmly in the NAFBC (Not Another F Brownie Camp) and very much against home baking by work colleagues,

Sorry you are right about having them wrapped.
I am gluten intolerant..not coeliac..so not as strict on the touching bit. I won't be sick just get a rash if have gluten

RobinStrike · 25/11/2024 22:41

Also, I'm not sure how many coeliac colleagues you have but please as well as keeping them in packaging and on a separate plate, label them for coeliac people only for the first half hour/hour. It's amazing how many people see items and think they look good and by the time the coeliac person arrives it's all gone.

BobbyBiscuits · 25/11/2024 22:54

I make cherry Bakewell 'cookies'. They're softer than normal ones. My celiac mate likes them.

250g ground almonds
60g melted butter
60-100g sugar (to taste)
Two eggs, beaten
1 tsp baking powder
Pinch Cinnamon
Splash of Vanilla
Splash of milk
Cherry jam. I add a bit to the mix then put a dent in the middle of each cookie and a blob of jam.

Just mix all ingredients together with your hands if you like! Make small balls, flatten and put the jam on. It makes about 12.
Cook on gas mark 5 for about 20 mins. Or until going slightly brown.

Thank you to everyone who actually answered the question that was asked. I will have a look at all the recommendations given and make some choices.

For the person who wanted a decent GF sausage rolls, the Genius ones are good. I never particularly liked sausage rolls anyway, but I do like them. They are in the freezer section of Co op.

bookmarket · 26/11/2024 07:43

OP - I was diagnosed coeliac this year and my young adult DD last year. Your colleague will be so touched that you have thought of them. These acts of kindness might seem small but are a big thing to someone who is either coeliac or has to avoid gluten or have allergies.

notapizzaeater · 28/11/2024 21:11

People who mentioned gf Stropwaffles - if you're near York the Dutch pancake house sells them (and does the most amazing GF pancakes)

bluegreygreen · 28/11/2024 23:50

Oohhh thanks @notapizzaeater - we're not too far away from York. Discovered the Dutch pancake house on our last trip there but it was closed for the day! We had planned to return and now have yet another reason 😊

My dd lives in Amsterdam and last year brought me not only stroopwafels but gf pepernuten.(Albert Hein) Morrisons are also good for gf, I'm hoping for the blood orange and dark chocolate biscuits in my stocking. But florentines (esp the blonde chocolate ones) are my favourite-can't remember where I got them from.
