What's the matter iwth a regular oven?

belcantavinissima · 27/04/2008 15:24

you put the chicken in the chicken brick then place it all in a regular oven! it cooks it slowly and makes it tender and juicy. only thing is i cant remember how long to leave it in for

Arrghh

This.

NappiesGalore · 27/04/2008 15:29

same time as normal, no? never seen one but imagine it would be same time as normal. imagine the brick part would just be keeping moisture/juices in.
stick a pokey thing in and see if juices run clear, then its cooked. no?

We have a chicken brick. Soak it in water, put in the chicken (we add veg, spuds and whatever to get twhole meal out of the one pot). Put in cold oven, and set oven to 250C. To keep things easy, we let it go for abt 90 minutes and the chicken is well done (but still moist). We have a couple of recipes if you would like - chicken with mushrooms, roast chicken...... roast chicken on its own would be nearer an hour than 90 mins.

ooh hbmummy that would be great thanks!

well it was a bit of a disaster, my oven is not fully functioning atm as bottom element appears to not be working despite changing it recently so had the damn thing in at the top for 2 hours and it wasnt properly cooked .so had to have bloody cold ham which was meant for the kids packed lunches ---- the chicken took 3 hours in the end. arrrhhhhhgggg, so they will be enjoying v expensive sarnies this week.

Belcantavinissima - sorry for the late reply. Only just logged on again to MN this morning.

Chicken with Mushrooms recipe

  • 1 chicken
  • 1 soupspoon of English mustard
  • parsley, minced tarragon
  • 300g mushrooms
  • juice of 1 lemon

Stuff the chicken with the giblets (optional), the parsley and the minced tarragon. Put salt and pepper in. Coat the chicken with mustard. Put in the oven, lid closed, for 50mins at 250C. Then turn the chicken over, add some spoons of boiling water on the chicken and put back in the over for 15 to 20 mins without cover.

Being properly lazy, we sort of modified the recipe to exclude taking out and turning the chicken over and spooning boiling water. Basically we just pop the whole thing is and 90 mins later - voila! If you are not sure, can always pop open the lid and check if there are juice/chicken looks moist - and add water accordingly.

Roast Chicken recipe

  • 1 chicken
  • salt, pepper

Put the chicken with salt and pepper according to your taste in the dish. Cover, and cook in oven for 1 hour at 250C.

Not tried this roast chicken recipe though.

Hope this helps.
