Soup competition

Friend is hosting a get together at the weekend and everyone has to bring a soup and we will all have little mugs of each crown a winner just for fun. Think there is going to be 8-10 of us. Gone are our wild weekends out partying 😅. I think most people will be bringing along a slow cooker or cauldron so they would need to be something that would do ok kept warm like that. No dietary requirements apart from a nut allergy. What soup would you prepare to take the prize? Please no criticism of how you think it's a rubbish idea or anything as it's just a bit of fun.

Edited to add that I know someone is doing French onion another is doing a tomato soup.

I genuinely would like to be a judge. Sounds great.

I love a home made mulligatawny (sp)

AnneLovesGilbert · 04/11/2024 22:35

Broccoli and cheddar or cannelini bean. Are you after recipes? I love soup and think it sounds fun!

shoofly · 04/11/2024 22:37

Sweet potato with red chilli and coconut milk (finished off with lime juice) it's my favourite

snowgal · 04/11/2024 22:41

Minestrone topped with homemade pesto - it's got something for everyone. Sounds like an awesome event!

ProvincialLady24 · 04/11/2024 22:47

Leek and potato served with grated cheddar

I was going to suggest something different like a cold, Spanish soup such as Ajo Blanco- but that has almonds in it, so scrap that! 😬

I currently have a glut of celeriac growing, and have been making this celeriac soup every week https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/creamofceleriacsoup59784 You can serve with crispy bacon, or crispy serrano ham

Pea and ham soup? Mine is more of a stew consistency though. I buy a smoked ham hock/knuckle from the butcher and remove the rind. I buy 2 packs (1 pack would make it more soup like) of quick soak peas and soak as per instructions. I then either slow cooker or boil everything on the stove top with celery, carrots, onion, a few potatoes. I often add some celeriac, swede or whatever veg I have in the fridge.

Edited to say that it sounds like a fun night- don't suppose there is a spare seat for anyone else??? 😉

James Martin’s celeriac soup is a great winter dish. Leave out the bacon for a vegetarian version. Serve with crispy pancetta and/or croûtons for crunch.

Courgette, Aubergine, tomato and harissa served with crumbled feta

AdaColeman · 04/11/2024 23:19

Borscht, the version with all the potatoes, beetroot and onions blended in so it's a thick soup, make it with a good stock, and add grated nutmeg as a finishing spice.
The fabulous colour is a sure winner. Serve it topped with a swirl of sour cream to set of the intense colour.
You can add things like thinly sliced sausage or diced gammon while it's heating, to make it more hearty, but it is extremely good without meat additions.

It sounds like a good night @TheLadyIsAVamp !

What a brilliant idea for a get together!

For me, what makes a soup amazing is the toppings, so it needs a drizzle of something and a sprinkle of something else. So a lightly spiced parsnip soup would have some fried parsnip shreds and a drizzle of single cream on top for example.

Please keep us updated so we can all join the party vicariously!

And would you have a recipe that you could share please?

Moier · 04/11/2024 23:28

Pea and ham..my favourite.
Only one l make ( others l buy).

HundredAcreOwl · 05/11/2024 02:15

A bit different, I really like this hot and sour one from Gok Wan, although I use water chestnuts rather than bamboo shoots, and because of an error in the book version I have, I also add spring onions!

Hot and Sour Soup

Balancing sweet and sour flavours of soy sauce, vinegar, mushrooms and fresh ginger this Gok Wan recipe makes for the perfect Chinese starter.

StandingSideBySide · 05/11/2024 03:05

Broccoli is always my favourite but my dh does an amazing lemon rice soup.

I like the look of @HundredAcreOwl s soup though and might give that a go tomorrow 👍

TwinklyNight · 05/11/2024 03:48

Mushroom or clam chowder. Cullen Skink/Smoked haddock chowder.

Onlyonekenobe · 05/11/2024 03:57

I’d do a curried cauliflower and/or lentil soup, maybe with coconut milk. Lots of coriander and lime juice.

Or a chicken tortilla soup, with coriander, lime, avocado, Mexican cheese, tortilla strips.

Agree with pp, it’s all the bits on top that make a soup amazing. Otherwise each mouthful tastes the same, especially if it’s pureed.

Wigtopia · 05/11/2024 04:02

Salmon soup, Finnish style. It is potatoes, carrots, lots of dill. The base is stock and cream with the salmon added at the end

sashh · 05/11/2024 04:19

I do an Asian broth that I then spice up with whatever I have in the cupboard / fridge.

The basic broth is a cube of frozen garlic, a cube of frozen ginger and boiling water.

Thinks that can be added:
Chilli flakes, chilli powder, other spices, soy sauce.
Flaked chicken, broccoli, mushrooms, sliced spring onion, water chestnuts, carrots, mange tout, coconut milk, grated coconut.

Make sure everything is sliced / cubed quite small because you don't blend it.

GildedRage · 05/11/2024 04:41

Corn and potato chowder with bacon bits and cheddar
Beef and Barley
Chicken and Matzo Balls.
I love soups!
Great idea

GrumpyPanda · 05/11/2024 04:49

Chicken, leek and apple soup from actual chicken stock incl shredded chicken, add apple juice, heavy cream and a small amount each of apple cider vinegar and calvados.

MrsCatE · 05/11/2024 05:04

I second @sashh idea of an Asian broth - just leave out the coconut (but that would be sad!) if that is included in the nut allergy. Put out condiments / additional toppings so people can adjust to their taste e.g finely chopped spring onions, coriander, lime, chopped chilli in fish sauce, chilli oil plus some fine egg noodles. With everyone testing each others' and imbibing that much liquid, I wouldn't be surprised if people got stuffed very quickly only to be peckish a bit later! So perhaps have some nice bread, crackers and cheese platter for afters!

BitOutOfPractice · 05/11/2024 06:43

Soup is an acceptable breakfast food right?

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 05/11/2024 06:48

@GrumpyPanda - I had a similar soup in Canada last year, but with Turkey. It was absolutely delicious!

There are some fabulous suggestions on here - but I do wish people would link to their recipes… please? ☺️☺️☺️

Doingthework · 05/11/2024 07:07

Fab idea!

You could go fancy but if it’s the inaugural competition I go with a classic chicken and sweet corn

best of luck!
