And the worst meal ever?

Seeing the best meal thread made me all nostalgic and then I was chatting to a colleague who said "You must have eaten some stinkers too?" which made me wonder how many eating nighmares we've had?

I proffer two.

On a climb somewhere on the Algerian/Tunisian border we were befriended by a farmer who walked with us for a few hours. Eventually we passed his rather dilapidated home and he insisted on feeding us. We sat and watched him proudly milk his goat in front of us and then hand us a warm bowlful each....

In a restaurant in Hong Kong, with chinese clients, as the only female in the group of about 20 very important people I was solemnly handed the head of the enormous fish that had been presented to the table, and informed that the fish eyes were the most prized part of the fish to eat...

a dish served by my dear great aunt which looked like a pile of PAL (was steak and kidney) but served chilled..... she served this also to my aunt and cousin who refused to eat it- I on the other hand was too polite to decline.

dd1 made a cake but got the salt and sugar mixed up.

She was SO proud of having made it I didn't have the heart to not eat it.

(am feeling a bit queasy just remembering it now )

A lovely 96 year old lady once served me up a dish of her home made corned beef curry. Her kitchen probably hadn't been cleaned since 1953. I professed not be hungry.

A meal given to us by my MIL which consisted of some weirdo sausages which failed to change colour despite her frying them for eons, accompanied by frozen stir-fry which she boiled for about 20mins. Bless her - we take her out to eat nowadays when we visit.

White tripe sausages and cabbaage in Lyons.
Closely followed by fried spaghetti and Kasha in Russia.
Closely followed by a supposedly thai curry which was just pure curry paste with raw chicken, in my local curry house. Bleurgh.

my dads sauce for pasta which consisted of onion, vinegar and curry powder

Eating out?

A restaurant we'd always fancied going to as it had a nice name and in lovely sttings.

So we went a spart of our weekend away.

Hideous inside, and crap staff.

I had "fresh" pasta and "homemeade" sauce - no way.

DH had some fish thing, and it came woth horseradish sauce.

Neither of us could eat much of it.

Duck with raspberry sauce. Think melted raspberry icecream. I still gag at the memory.

Roast chicken prepared by me . I was living in a shared house and one of my lovely housemates had taken the chicken out of the oven, cooked their stuff and put the chicken back so it had cooked for about 1 hour less than I thought... Horrible food poisoning. Horrible. Probably should have checked whether pink and bloody chicken is edible...

Has desi posted about the wobbly sausage abomination yet?

Mine was in an Austrian hotel. There was a lot of blood on the plate. And a squirt of cream which turned pink. And sulphurous cabbage. Sorry, I can't continue the description, it's too upsetting.

a diner/cafe on the M1 south. Obviously a former Little Chef building which had been taken over by an independent outfit. Vile food and scarily dirty. Even DS1 didn't eat his lunch which is VERY unlike him! We got out of there as quick as poss.... and I've eaten in lots of dodgy places in my time.
