What do you put on/in your porridge?

I’m usually a brown seeded toast and marmite for breakfast person, but I’m trying to economise, so thought I would have porridge for breakfast instead.

The problem is, I’m a bit weary of it already, one week in.

I have a mild intolerance to milk, but I hate soy and nut milk substitutes.
So I make it with water and just add a small splash of real milk on top to cool.

I don’t really like overly sweet things for breakfast, I’ve been adding cinnamon and a tiny dab of honey. It’s fine, but I just feel there must be more to life than this!

What can I add to make me look forward to eating it?

You could make a batch of brown rice, freeze or fridge it and take 5 minutes to make an egg stir fry with mushrooms in the morning.

Anyways I have porridge made with water, grated apple, spoon of yoghurt and seeds and nuts.

I see a few people have mentioned cream and brown sugar but it has to be a layer of Demerara sugar to give a lovely crunch in contrast to the smoothness of the porridge and cream. This is my once a year Boxing Day breakfast treat!

Like you I don't like it too milky.

Water, banana, cinnamon and oats (microwaved)

Top with dollop of yogurt

And then depending on what I have:
Nuts, seeds, berries, bit of granola or cereal for crunch crunch (that one is for DS, not for me)

I buy frozen berries as love berries and they’re so much cheaper frozen and don’t make much difference in oats/porridge tbh.

I make it with oat milk and like either a spoonful of bonne maman hazelnut spread, or sugar and lemon.

Can you make congee with brown rice? Ive never made it and am intrigued as to whether I would like it but I dont get on well with rice (or many carbs) but I can tolerate pinhead oatmeal, so I would prefer brown if possible

I want to try it just to see what its like however

Yes you can make it with brown rice. Have done so before.
