What do you put on/in your porridge?

I’m usually a brown seeded toast and marmite for breakfast person, but I’m trying to economise, so thought I would have porridge for breakfast instead.

The problem is, I’m a bit weary of it already, one week in.

I have a mild intolerance to milk, but I hate soy and nut milk substitutes.
So I make it with water and just add a small splash of real milk on top to cool.

I don’t really like overly sweet things for breakfast, I’ve been adding cinnamon and a tiny dab of honey. It’s fine, but I just feel there must be more to life than this!

What can I add to make me look forward to eating it?

Oat milk, raisins and honey. That does make it quite sweet though.

OatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 29/09/2024 12:46

Another oat milk lover here too. Favourite combinations are;
Frozen (warmed) dark cherries and a small piece of dark chocolate (5g).
Peanut butter.
Mixed nuts and honey.
Stewed apple/rhubarb/plum etc plus nuts.

@TheBlackCatWithTheWhiteSpot I make my porridge with water in the microwave (45g oats and 250ml water and a pinch of salt) and then add a milk moat when it's in the cereal bowl. I drink cows milk but my dd is allergic to dairy so has oat milk, which I have had on cornflakes and is really delicious, so you might like that better. We get Oatly barista long life cartons.
I either have dark brown sugar on mine or golden syrup.

Congee is made with rice, I think you'd prefer it if you're savoury

I was thinking this... why not just make congee?

It can be as simple as plain congee with a dash of soy, sesame oil, chopped spring onions... Or the last evening off work prep small tubs of shredded chicken, dried mushroom (finely sliced), crispy onion, etc. so you're just adding those each morning as toppings. Congee is such a comforting breakfast!

AgainandagainandagainSS · 29/09/2024 12:48

A chopped banana and raisins

Minced pork, garlic, ginger, Maggie seasoning and if you are really hungry, add an egg.

Blueberries, bananas, small sprinkling of coconut sugar or a spoonful of natural yoghurt.

NetZeroZealot · 29/09/2024 12:54

Fresh fruit - usually blueberries or banana
Chia seeds cooked in with the porridge
mixed seeds sprinkled on top.

Poisonwood · 29/09/2024 12:55

We are porridge aficionados in this house! Off the top of my head:

Dried mixed fruit
Mincemeat
Marmalade
Raspberries, slivered almonds & desiccated coconut
Stewed apple and apple pie spices
Prunes
Pumpkin Seeds
Pureed carrot, raisins & carrot cake spices
Chopped tinned pears and ginger
Black cherries & grated dark chocolate
1 tsp hot chocolate powder

NB

You can also make the porridge using juice rather than water/milk…so use apple juice instead, or orange juice, cranberry etc

Also - using coconut milk makes the most decadent bowl you can imagine. Good with raspberries.

ladycardamom · 29/09/2024 12:56

Dollop of peanut butter! So good!

StormingNorman · 29/09/2024 12:57

I make a big batch of apple compote on Sunday afternoon and top it with that. Sometimes add frozen raspberries, rhubarb in season or pear to vary it. Never add any sugar - just cinnamon and:or allspice in the porridge for sweetness.

Yes.
I'm not a breakfast person so I eat it fir dinner.

StormingNorman · 29/09/2024 12:59

A cafe near me tops theirs with banana, honey, sesame and roughly chopped walnuts. That always feels quite luxurious.

A spoon of Nutella of Jam swirled through is nice too. I haven’t tried it with Biscoff spread but imagine that would be equally good.

EmmaEmEmz · 29/09/2024 13:01

I once had porridge with crispy bacon chopped up on it and maple syrup...was yum!

MoanyPony · 29/09/2024 13:09

I don't cook it (cooked porridge: 🤢) so I put oats and seeds in a bowl. DC have a spoon of cocoa powder and a spoon of drinking chocolate and out milk and I have natural yoghurt (or milk) and a spoon of maple syrup. All cold. Yum.

MoanyPony · 29/09/2024 13:12

Also sometimes baked oats: oats, seeds, mashed ripe banana, egg and cocoa powder. Sometimes chocolate buttons and frozen raspberries. Baked in the oven like a loaf cake.

GhostOrchid · 29/09/2024 13:16

I just do it in the microwave with a pinch of cinnamon and handful of frozen blueberries or cherries. A drizzle of agave syrup when it comes out. Cow milk or nut milk is equally good.

I don’t much like the sound of savoury porridge.

TheDayBeforeYouCame · 29/09/2024 13:17

I can’t see how any of these suggestions meet the requirement to economise over toast and marmite.

chisanunian · 29/09/2024 13:19

I can't abide the stuff but DH likes it. He uses milk and a little brown sugar. My late DF also liked it, and having Scottish ancestors, would put salt in his.

MissPeachyKeen · 29/09/2024 13:23

Cooked with milk, cinnamon & ginger. Topped with a splash of cold milk and sugar.

mouse70 · 29/09/2024 13:32

Not on top but I used to mix Cocoa powder or instant coffee granules in with cooking liquid added to porridge

JumpstartMondays · 29/09/2024 14:18
  • Cherry Bakewell porridge! Splash of almond extract, handful of frozen cherries to defrost and heat through, sprinkle of slithered almonds on top. 👌
  • Carrot cake porridge! Grated carrot, raisins, nutmeg and cinnamon. Maple syrup to sweeten as required.
  • Grated apple and cinnamon.
  • Dollop of peanut butter and sliced banana
  • plain, cooked with water not milk and a pinch of salt
  • cocoa powder
NellieJean · 29/09/2024 14:37

Fresh fruit and cinnamon.

Aposterhasnoname · 29/09/2024 16:25

Honey, banana, frozen blueberries and sometimes strawberries

helloyoumums · 29/09/2024 18:02

Peanut butter, banana, and honey
