What do you put on/in your porridge?

I’m usually a brown seeded toast and marmite for breakfast person, but I’m trying to economise, so thought I would have porridge for breakfast instead.

The problem is, I’m a bit weary of it already, one week in.

I have a mild intolerance to milk, but I hate soy and nut milk substitutes.
So I make it with water and just add a small splash of real milk on top to cool.

I don’t really like overly sweet things for breakfast, I’ve been adding cinnamon and a tiny dab of honey. It’s fine, but I just feel there must be more to life than this!

What can I add to make me look forward to eating it?

I can’t see how any of these suggestions meet the requirement to economise over toast and marmite.

😂 You make a good point.

lavenderlou · 29/09/2024 18:11

I don't like adding things to my porridge so it's just milk and a bit of brown sugar.

TheBlackCatWithTheWhiteSpot · 29/09/2024 19:37

Ha ha, yes good point about it not necssarily being cheaper!

The bread I like is nearly £3 for a small loaf, but it only lasts a couple of days so it seems I am buying it all the time, about 3 or 4 loaves a week.

I was thinking I could just buy it at the weekend instead.

bread freezes well, just remove it slice by slice and warm it in the toaster.

UniversalTruth · 29/09/2024 19:49

Haven't RTFT sorry, but if you are intolerant of milk, you could try lactose free milk (more expensive) or long life oat milk (cheaper than milk I think it's you get it in Aldi/Lidl and great in porridge as it's already oats).

I do think you already eat a fairly cheap breakfast though.

pippapipps · 29/09/2024 19:49

I see your already adding cinnamon.. I add cinnamon I love it and flaxseed and chia seeds on mine , you can could add berries?

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 29/09/2024 19:51

Sultanas

Dillydollydingdong · 29/09/2024 20:00

Cream

Saschka · 29/09/2024 20:01

Frozen raspberries. They also cool it down enough to eat. Bit of maple syrup for sweetness, but literally only a teaspoon a d you could leave it out.

Coconutter24 · 29/09/2024 20:03

I make it with oat milk (dairy intolerant) and use either honey or golden syrup. Sometimes I’ll put a chopped up banana in it

aramox1 · 29/09/2024 20:03

Blackcurrant jam/bit of peanut butter

BlackOrangeFrog · 29/09/2024 20:05

Rhubarb

I was thinking this... why not just make congee?

It can be as simple as plain congee with a dash of soy, sesame oil, chopped spring onions... Or the last evening off work prep small tubs of shredded chicken, dried mushroom (finely sliced), crispy onion, etc. so you're just adding those each morning as toppings. Congee is such a comforting breakfast!

How long does congee take compared to porridge oats though?

And a grain is a grain is a grain. Thats the versatility of them, put stuff with rice, put stuff with oats

Livinginaclock · 29/09/2024 20:44

I make it in my slow cooker.
It's not something you'd make each morning but it freezes brilliantly so OP could defrost/heat some.

soupfiend · 29/09/2024 20:47

Yes I batch make my porridge so I dont make that each morning either, mine takes about an hour as I use pinhead oatmeal and cook it really slowly.

Vettrianofan · 29/09/2024 20:50

Blueberries.

AnnieMcFanny · 29/09/2024 20:51

Nothing. I cook it in a mix of water and milk with some salt then I add some more milk to serve. But that’s it.

LBFseBrom · 29/09/2024 21:01

I regularly have porridge with lots of fruit, eg berries, pineapple, chopped apple, sometimes banana. I sprinkle a little nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger on the cooked porridge, then add the mixed fruit and some cream. I don't sweeten it. It's lovely.

halava · 29/09/2024 21:02

Amazing how many like porridge with this and that in it!

I'm a porridge lover and have it all year round. I even bring my "mix" on hols if self catering, that's how flippin sad I am! I do 16/8 intermittent fasting, and honest to god I SOOOO look forward to my porridge that I salivate when it's nearly time to have it😊

My mix keeps me going from 11.30 or so for ages, and I often forget to have lunch, but might gobble a yogurt or something. Amazing for a horse of an appetite person like me!

Oats
Ground linseeds and flax seeds
A few heaped tablespoons of wheat bran (or oat bran)
A couple of spoons of vanilla protein powder.
Made on water in the ping machine and either almond or soya milk to cool it down. That's it, no sugar, honey, fruit or anything. I save the fruit for a home made smoothie instead.

Looking forward to tomorrow already!

MouseofCommons · 29/09/2024 21:05

I do overnight oats;
Cows milk or soya milk
1tsp sugar
Sprinkle of golden linseeds.
Then in the morning I add a splodge of plain yoghurt and top with either banana / raspberries or blueberries (both tastier if from frozen and defrosted in fridge overnight).

Makingwaves2 · 29/09/2024 21:08

Sultanas, chopped banana, cinnamon and frozen fruit with Greek yoghurt. Cacao nibs are great . Walnuts and almonds are great too. Chia seeds and pumpkin seeds don't agree with me but I love them!

TheDandyLion · 29/09/2024 21:09

Mill the oats to a finer powder and add a spoonful of milk powder. Makes a smoother more ready brek texture to it and a bit less chewy grain.

evtheria · 29/09/2024 22:04

@soupfiend I usually make a big batch in an uncovered rice cooker (slow cooker could work, I guess) because I quickly cool it down, portion out, and keep for 3-5 days to easily reheat. I know some people soak the rice beforehand to speed up the cooking process, but you could also buy 'instant congee' in cups or sachets. I know most grains are neutral but I wouldn't use them in place of smooth congee, I'm definitely a sweet (and milky) oats person!

Blueuggboots · 29/09/2024 22:10

Have you tried it with oat milk? It's lovely!!
A tablespoon of biscoff spread and chopped up banana.
Brown sugar and cream.
Sultanas and chopped apple.
Blueberries.
Hazelnut spread- either the kinder bueno one or chocolate.

soupfiend · 29/09/2024 22:12

Can you make congee with brown rice? Ive never made it and am intrigued as to whether I would like it but I dont get on well with rice (or many carbs) but I can tolerate pinhead oatmeal, so I would prefer brown if possible

I want to try it just to see what its like however
