Tinned Spaghetti Carbonara - yes or no?

I heard a discussion about tinned spaghetti carbonara on the radio this morning. Lots of very unimpressed, if not disgusted, foodies contributed, I got the impression no-one was in favour of it. The main objections were that it is meant to be made with fresh ingredients, and cooked al dente, which are obviously impossible with tinned food. Would you eat canned spaghetti carbonara?

pinkpantherxxx · 30/08/2024 22:37

Heinz is launching it soon.

And I'm not advertising it, I don't think I could eat it.

I’ve never heard of tinned spaghetti carbonara. But I’m pretty sure it would be horrible. I bought some cans of tinned macaroni cheese a few years ago when we were camping, thinking “well it won’t be gourmet but how bad could it be really?” It was totally rank. I’m quite happy to have spag hoops, tinned chicken supreme, beans etc but the mad cheese was disgusting and I can’t imagine spag carb would be better. Soft squashy spaghetti in a gloopy bacon flavoured white sauce? I think no.

minipie · 30/08/2024 22:39

That’s not even possible

I mean it is, but it’s not carbonara

Neveranynamesleft · 30/08/2024 22:40

It will just be spaghetti with a gloopy cream sauce like pva glue and tiny bits of processed ham. No thanks.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 30/08/2024 22:42

Carbonara never tastes good in ready meals so I’d expect the tinned to be gross too.

Precipice · 30/08/2024 22:42

I wouldn't be choosing to eat tinned anything, outside of a survival situation.

The only thing I get in tins is coconut milk, as an ingredient.

username44416 · 30/08/2024 22:42

People eat all kinds of crap. Pot noodles, sausages in beans, tinned ravioli, so I can imagine people eating it.

soupfiend · 30/08/2024 22:43

I mean the minute they mention low in salt, you know its horrible anyway.

All this low salt, low sugar, low fat

Its very low in calories, 400g for about 220 cals? Probably mostly sauce

soupfiend · 30/08/2024 22:45

Although people are utter utter snobs on this site about things in tins, post above for example!!!

Tinned food has been around since late 1800s and is a great way of preserving food, we should celebrate it. We buy lots of tinned toms, chickpeas, all sorts of pulses and legumes, fruits, artichoke hearts, tons of things

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 30/08/2024 23:30

Absolutely not. I would have to be really, really, really hungry with no prospect of a meal to eat that. But I don't like any of their other stuff either.

GogAndMagog · 30/08/2024 23:40

If tinned macaroni cheese is anything to go by, no.

GogAndMagog · 30/08/2024 23:42

Oh just reading more comments, it actually exists????

I'lll have to try it of course!

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/08/2024 23:43

If it’s anything like tinned spaghetti bolognaise, no thank you.

Bobbybobbins · 30/08/2024 23:47

We used to have tinned meatballs and tinned ravioli as kids. I bought some recently and opened it - it smelt like dog food. I had to throw it out.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/08/2024 23:48

I tried tinned macaroni cheese once, it was truly horrible.
Hard to imagine tinned 'carbonara' being better.

Yes, and if you've nothing much fresh in you can make something much better than pasta gloop with those.

Rubyandscarlett · 30/08/2024 23:52

Hard no!

dudsville · 30/08/2024 23:53

The pic on this tin makes the pasta look like it has sores/wounds. Not for me!

smallchange · 30/08/2024 23:54

No. If I could only have carbonara from a tin then I'd just not have it.

There's loads of things that are good from a tin. Pasta isn't one of them unless its spaghetti hoops.

MotherJessAndKittens · 30/08/2024 23:59

Absolutely not! So easy to make can't imagine it from a can! Beans - yes, tomato spaghetti - yes, soup - yes, Carbonara - no way!
