Tinned Spaghetti Carbonara - yes or no?

OpalGoose · 30/08/2024 22:35

I heard a discussion about tinned spaghetti carbonara on the radio this morning. Lots of very unimpressed, if not disgusted, foodies contributed, I got the impression no-one was in favour of it. The main objections were that it is meant to be made with fresh ingredients, and cooked al dente, which are obviously impossible with tinned food. Would you eat canned spaghetti carbonara?

Yuck.

CitronellaDeVille · 31/08/2024 00:41

No

And eating tinned artichoke hearts is no reason to eat anything else out of a tin just because it’s in a tin.

This sort of thing wouldn’t be allowed if we were still in the EU. Italy would have some sort of regulation.

This abomination is David Cameron’s fault.

Olives in a tin
Olive oil in tin
Salmon
Tuna
Kippers

Just running through my cupboards

TroysMammy · 31/08/2024 08:07

Carbonara isn't made with cream.

Although people are utter utter snobs on this site about things in tins, post above for example!!!

Tinned food has been around since late 1800s and is a great way of preserving food, we should celebrate it. We buy lots of tinned toms, chickpeas, all sorts of pulses and legumes, fruits, artichoke hearts, tons of things

I buy tinned foods and am not a snob but somethings shouldn't be tinned, carbonara for example.

Livinginaclock · 31/08/2024 08:10

I'll try it, but I'll try anything.
Once a year or so I get a craving fir tinned spaghetti bolognese, and nothing else hits the spot.

HotCrossBunplease · 31/08/2024 08:11

Disgusting.

I tend to limit my consumption of tinned things to single ingredient tins- pulses, fish, tomatoes, don’t mind tinned fruit on occasion. But tinned soup always tastes shit and anything that pretends to be a dish/meal -yuck.

That’s not even possible

I mean it is, but it’s not carbonara

This. The whole point of carbonara is it’s fresh pasta and eggs.

Bjorkdidit · 02/09/2024 11:28

Morrisons used to do a tinned rigatoni carbonara which was bloody lovely, big disappointment when it was discontinued.

But most Heinz canned products are terrible, so I'd not expect much from this.

I'd not expect it to be authentic, or even comparable to something made from fresh, but for something that can be kept in the cupboard and heated up without any thought or effort, I'd give it a go. Could also be good for camping too.

Comedycook · 02/09/2024 11:32

No..not because I'm a tinned food snob but because pasta is so easy to make...and dried pasta is cheap so I can't see any reason to. Carbonara is only four ingredients anyway.

I was recently in the supermarket and saw a tomato pasta frozen meal. Literally just pasta and tomato sauce but frozen....seemed so pointless unless of course you don't have a hob and just a microwave. Otherwise I couldn't see the point.

I suppose the depressing reality there is that some people don’t have access to a hob for basic cooking, and the microwave tomato pasta is their only choice. And the same is probably true for tinned pasta / tinned meals - they’re aimed at people who don’t have the option to make something better.

But yea, I’ll hard swerve on the tinned carbonara, thanks.

AM130674 · 02/09/2024 12:26

No, just no. Ok for students I guess, but for £2 a tin, fresh carbonara can be made more cheaply?!

WoahThreeAces · 02/09/2024 12:26

Tinned macaroni cheese is one of my guilty pleasures so I'd probably really like this 😳 but I don't think I'd ever buy it

Well yes. I plan to make puttanesca tonight that's mostly from tinned ingredients. Very different to cracking open a tinned carbonara 🤢

OpalGoose · 02/09/2024 12:30

I'll try it, once, just to say I've tried it really but I don't have any great expectations for it.

Carbonara is about the quickest and easiest pasta dish to make.

Canned sounds rank.

No not for me! My DD likes macaroni cheese in a tin though 🤢 (which I know is very unhealthy and I do make fresh Mac & cheese but it's handy to have a tin in the cupboard!)

StarSlinger · 02/09/2024 12:54

I love tinned macaroni cheese, so I'd give it a go.

Sethera · 02/09/2024 12:55

Generally I like tinned food, usually just eaten cold from the tin as it retains flavour better if you don't eat it. Tinned ravioli is nice that way. But cheese doesn't go well in a tin so this would be a no from me.

Cavacrew · 02/09/2024 12:57

No! Making tomatoe sauce doesn't have to take long at all. You can go really simple with a tine of tomatoes, some crushed garlic and salt and pepper or go crazy with lots of your favourite veg, herbs etc.
My favourite is a veg bolognese made with white wine.😊

Can you use white wine for Bolognese sauce? - Sure wine not

Yes you can make Bolognese sauce with white wine. In fact, TV cook and British National Treasure Mary Berry says it is "correct" and Mary knows her stuff!

Birdsaremyfriends · 02/09/2024 13:04

All tinned pasta is acceptable if you accept that it is nothing to do with the original recipe. Even a jar of carbonara sauce has nothing to do with real carbonara which is why you never see it for sale in Italy!

I wouldn't be choosing to eat tinned anything, outside of a survival situation.

The only thing I get in tins is coconut milk, as an ingredient.

So you don't use tinned tomatoes to make spaghetti Bolognese or a chilli?
Tinned tuna/mackerel are good sources of protein.
Tinned chickpeas, kidney beans, butter beans etc. (My gran nearly killed my grandpa once with unsoaked dried kidney beans in a stew)

I don't use any tinned or jarred sauces, spaghetti hoops etc but done of the above are store cupboard staples
