Tinned Spaghetti Carbonara - yes or no?

OpalGoose · 30/08/2024 22:35

I heard a discussion about tinned spaghetti carbonara on the radio this morning. Lots of very unimpressed, if not disgusted, foodies contributed, I got the impression no-one was in favour of it. The main objections were that it is meant to be made with fresh ingredients, and cooked al dente, which are obviously impossible with tinned food. Would you eat canned spaghetti carbonara?

Those of you willing to try this are very brave.

I am fine with tins in principle and have two shelves of them, but just …. No

Also @TroysMammy is correct. I have never heard of an Italian putting cream in carbonara, except for a certain author of a British cookery book. Charitably, I like to think his editors insisted

Birdsaremyfriends · 02/09/2024 13:13

Carbonara if done properly is already lovely and creamy without cream.

Mintgum · 02/09/2024 13:13

Not something I'd want but i would eat it if I had to.
I do wonder what it would taste like 🤔.

Gloopy.

LadyKenya · 02/09/2024 13:20

No, I would not eat that.

NeverMindTheBackProblems · 02/09/2024 13:22

I'll give it a go.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 02/09/2024 13:29

No because I've had heinz Macaroni Cheese (shudders)

Hoppingblackbird · 02/09/2024 13:35

I know some preppers who buy Heinz Macaroni Cheese, so they might buy this one.
It’s the only situation I would eat it I think. Maybe for campers too.

Maybe it's like the concept of dwarf bread - you look at it, think, nah, not that hungry yet and tighten your belt.

😂😂

No one ever went hungry when they had some dwarf bread to avoid.

Arrggghhh!!! Noooo!
I despise tinned macaroni cheese and this is bound to be even worse!
Spaghetti carbonara is just pancetta, parmesan and an egg? It takes 5 minutes to cook?! Obviously you need to cook the pasta but you could buy the 'fresh' one.
The mind boggles! I guess maybe students might go for it?

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 02/09/2024 19:06

Tins that are whole meals rather than ingredients were always popular with our food bank clients.

AM130674 · 02/09/2024 12:26

No, just no. Ok for students I guess, but for £2 a tin, fresh carbonara can be made more cheaply?!

The whole point of being a student is that you have time on your hands to teach yourself to cook.

I buy tinned foods and am not a snob but somethings shouldn't be tinned, carbonara for example.

I was responding to a poster who made a point of saying they never ate anything out of a tin except for coconut milk.

Snobby.

I'll try it, once, just to say I've tried it really but I don't have any great expectations for it.

I haven't found it yet, I'm looking, honest, so I can take one for the team do my research and report back.

I now have fixed in my mind the Gino Di Campo and Holly Willoughby cooking episode where he made carbonate, she suggested cream and and said something like "that would make my grandmother a bicycle". If I find it, I'll try to link.

Not sure how it's that different to tinned ravioli really

Up in arms etc seems bizarre

worcesterpear · 04/09/2024 22:01

I wouldn't eat it I agree it would be similar to a ready meal carbonara, too much of the wrong sort of (creamy) sauce with awful bits of meat. We had it tonight and it takes about 10 minutes from scratch.

So my searching for it, buying it, taking it home then cooking reheating it is rather counter-productive. Taking more than one for the team 😂

I meant to update this when I tried it. I haven't found it in any shop near me, so now I think it's a myth. 😂

No 🤢

cookiebee · 30/10/2024 19:51

There’s a YouTuber called atomic shrimp who reviewed it, he suggested because of the gatekeeping that surrounds Italian foods that Heinz were probably producing this as a marketing ploy, it drums up a fuss but bring business, he hated it by the way and is a fairly open minded cook.

RedPanda2022 · 30/10/2024 20:48

Sadly my dh LOVES tinned macaroni cheese…I bet he would love this tinned ‘carbonara’…!
