hot chocolate substitute for cocoa?

My little boy really wants to make a chocolate cake today have all the ingredients except cocoa and being Sunday the shops are shut. I do have some good quality hot chocolate will we be able to use this instead. Sorry, as you can probably tell I'm no cook.

Isn't hot chocolate powder cocoa powder with added sugar (and sometimes vitamins)
I would say probably ok but reduce the sugar.
But then I don't have any idea really because I always make choc cake with cooking choc. Do you have any of that?

No you melt the choc first (bain marie or in micro-wave with a tablespoon of water)

sounds scrummy yes please - DS2 has his heart on making a chocolate cake this afternoon. I've tried to fob him off with flapjacks but he's not having it.

Just in case (gotta log off soon):

200G cooking choc
4 eggs
150g sugar
80g plain flour
200g butter

Gas 6 (200 C)

melt chocolate (as in previous post)
mix butter in well
in another bowl, mix eggs and sugar, then the flour
pour chocolate mix into the flour mix and mix well
butter and flour a cake tin (I use a round one about 8 inch diameter, two inch high)

Bake for 25 mins

Doesn't rise very high but is delicious
