No meat and no eggs - what protein for breakfast

seaisamazing · 06/04/2024 10:34

Good morning,

Ok - I’m not being eating well due to lots of stresses in my life but now is the turning point as I wobble too much for my liking 🤣

problem is eggs I’m intolerant to so absolute no. No meat ever.

What can I eat for protein? Thank you soooo much - as eggs are so easy but my body can’t tolerate them. I struggle with breakfast with no protein and then I get busted for the day - so maybe if I could fix breakfast then the rest would be easy 🤞I’m heavy carb / nearly all carbs diet which I want to change.

I want to be a fit / healthy / wobble free mama 🤩 x

Greek yoghurt
fish if you can develop a taste for it with slices of nice cheese and black rye bread…or just the bread and cheese, you’ll be full till lunch.

sourdough and baked beans or peanut butter

dahl. Several million Indians can’t be wrong.

lashy · 06/04/2024 12:52

I second Skyr - it's delicious, good for you and incredibly high in protein.
You could have it with a little granola / oats / muesli / fruit - grapes / blueberries / seeds - chia, pumpkin, sunflower...

1x Weetabix or similar for iron.

Xiaoxiong · 06/04/2024 12:54

Silken tofu (usually in a tetrapak box at the supermarket but if you can get fresh "flower tofu" at an Asian supermarket, even better) warmed up 1 min in the microwave
Top with Bombay mix, salted peanuts, sliced spring onion, splash of soy, splash of sesame oil, bit of chili crisp

Breakfast of champions!

I have a protein shake on busy mornings. I whizz up a scoop of protein powder, banana, chia seeds, peanut butter, cacao powder and Greek yoghurt with about 200mL of water. Gives a shake that fills a pint glass or a 500mL flask for about 450 calories and keeps me full til lunchtime.

This protein powder is good, no really bad UPFs

I would personally give “protein yogurts” a swerve as they’re full of artificial sweeteners. The Arla ones give me heart palpitations.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 06/04/2024 13:12

Feta and watermelon?

Beans on toast?

Mixed beans/chickpeas in vinaigrette dressing with feta, olives and cucumber?

OK, I have fish and rice for breakfast most days, so I'm clearly a bit more hardcore with my morning choices and I still miss the pre-coeliac winter morning with a hot steak and kidney pie or cheese and onion pasty from when I was in my twenties , but there's no law that says you must have something sweet or gloopy in the morning.

MumOfOneAwesomeHuman · 06/04/2024 14:10

Taifun sausages are lovely especially the herb ones. Made of tofu but taste yummy!

TTPD · 06/04/2024 14:19

I have porridge, and add pumpkin seeds and flaxseeds for some extra protein. You could add nuts as well/instead (I don't because DH has an anaphylactic allergy so we don't have them in the house).

I’ve never tried scrambled tofu in my life! I must try it thank you. Is that the regular tofu block you buy in the supermarket and press? Then pan fry it? And mush it up a bit?

smoked salmon first thing - I can’t do fish at breakfast time I need to warm up to it 🤣 - good for lunch though 👍

thank you

Buy the block and press it out, mash it up with a fork and add tumeric, salt, pepper and paprika. It's so tasty. Brown sauce over it is even better

soupfiend · 06/04/2024 14:24

Brilliant suggestions here, mine are similar

Smoked salmon with whatever
Kedgeree
Cottage cheese (longley farm, dont even think about another brand)
Dhal but you would need quit a lot of it for the protein, add paneer in it perhaps?

Illpickthatup · 06/04/2024 14:27

I'm vegan and my breakfast is usually cereal and a soya latte. Beans on toast is pretty high in protein and I tend to go for seeded breads. Another favourite is cinnamon and raisin bagel with peanut butter, mashed banana and chia seeds.

Not sure if you'd eat vegan sausages but I quite like them sometimes at the weekend for a treat. For tofu scramble I use a mix of firm and soft tofu. I always preferred my scrambled eggs a bit softer so adding the soft tofu gives a similar effect.

You don't need as much protein as you probably think you do. About 1g for every kg you weight. More of you're trying to build muscle.

Protein shakes are also good if you need a boost. Some brands are vile, I find protein works wondershake to be one of the better ones.

AutumnCrow · 06/04/2024 14:37

I agree with the posters saying to pick a decent bread like a seeded rye sourdough, for your toast.

Then add hummus, or cheese & tomatoes, or peanut butter, or baba ganouche & cottage cheese, or vegemite, or dahl, or beans.

Kippers, kedgeree or tuna & olive salad for lunch.

Cashew nuts and tofu in stir fries.

Mercurial123 · 06/04/2024 14:47

Beans. Foul is my favourite served with olives, chopped onion, tomato, pepper and taking.

CadyEastman · 06/04/2024 14:50

If you're used to today or crumpets how about a good peanut butter and a banana in your toast or some mashed avocado?

You could have beans and cheese on the crumpets.

*toast not today!

WishesPromised · 06/04/2024 14:57

Full fat Greek yoghurt with berries, prunes, honey, maple syrup, nuts, seeds etc

Catopia · 06/04/2024 15:15

Nut butter on toast or porridge.
Cheese on toast.
Veggie meat alternatives
Plenty of normal "sweet options" that are dairy protein, starting with the obvious, cereals and milk or a protein shake, yoghurt, etc.

ColourByNumbers88 · 06/04/2024 15:37

Seeds (combo of sunflower and pumpkin) mixed with stewed apple or chopped up apple and cinnamon is my quick, go to breakfast.

Or Fage Greek Yoghurt full fat with cherries (it has high protein).

Try Tempeh grated - similar to the scrambled tofu.

Ozanj · 06/04/2024 15:39

Scrambled tofu - this is the best protein alternative
Quorn sausages with veg and white beans
idli / dosa
Beans on Toast

tealandteal · 06/04/2024 15:39

I dice an apple and have with natural yogurt and some granola and flax seeds. Keeps me full until lunch and quickly to make.

Kalevala · 06/04/2024 15:50

Plenty aren't. Fage, Skyr, Greek yogurt. Just buy natural not flavoured.

Liquorish · 06/04/2024 15:58

Fruit smoothies with peanut butter keep me going for the day more than anything else. If I run out of frozen bananas I’ll have black beans/chickpeas and noodles with tomatoes/pepper/mushrooms or a scrambled tofu and avocado toasted sandwich. I add bouillon to the tofu and noodles which gives a lot of flavour.

I sympathise with the eggs. They were my go to for breakfast and one day my stomach just turned on them and I couldn’t have them again without being folded over from the cramps.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 06/04/2024 16:02

Veggie sausage and beans

Do you eat fish ? Kippers and smoked haddock are traditional breakfast fish, although my French brother in law eats tuna straight from the tin.

I also dislike protein shakes, but do sort of DIY protein smoothie with natural yoghurt, kefir, nut butters, banana and honey. I'm toying with adding Creatin.

TooMinty · 06/04/2024 16:05

I'm a vegan but I rarely eat breakfast...

However, when I do:
Scrambled tofu on toast or a bagel, might add avocado, tomatoes, basil
"B"LT - bacon made from tofu marinaded in maple syrup, soy sauce and sriracha
Peanut butter and bramble jelly on toast
Lidl plant based sausages, fried mushrooms & hash brown
