Let she who is without blame cast the first stone (or something) so here goes.

Bottled mint sauce is essential. Who on God's earth would make it themselves??????

I am a real foodie. But some things just don't taste the same if you make them yourself. Probably because of what you had as a child:

Heinz Tomato Soup
Anyone's mint sauce
Tinned peas

But definitely not canned/jarred/packet pasta sauces.

OverMyDeadBody · 29/03/2008 22:45

Also the marigold boullion powder is good for adding to vege gravy made how biwi said.

OverMyDeadBody · 29/03/2008 22:46

I agree. No home-made tomato soup will ever taste like heinz stuff, and waht's wrong with eating it every now hnd then? It reminds me of childhood too!

OverMyDeadBody · 29/03/2008 22:48

the pizza thing isn't cheating Cali, it's called improvising!

I've recently descovered that yorkshire puddingd are great eaten like pancakes with maple syrup in the mornings!

jennifersofia · 29/03/2008 22:50

Carmenere - that polish horseradish mustard sounds nice what is the name of it? Also, do Sainsbo's do Mrs. Balls chutneys?

onebatmother · 29/03/2008 22:54

lol middle initial cali.

bundle · 29/03/2008 22:56

cali
bought pizzas = fine (esp. if pizza express type or superior)

smash or another inferior type of pretend mashed pots - NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

get him to go & stand in the corner.

I sometimes put milk in earl grey tea but I don't suppose that counts?

bundle · 29/03/2008 23:21

bamamama that's totally ok

((is it leaves or bags?? grin))

bamamama · 30/03/2008 03:40

oh, it's a bag but it's a twinings bag so that's ok right?

Actually I must confess that I decided to make a 'proper' Sunday lunch today for the first time ever but didn't have time to roast a chicken. So I bought a ready roasted hot one from the supermarket. It was free range though.

I am going to make stock though so it sort of makes up for it!

LarryVeestAdamAntSpawnChorus · 30/03/2008 15:13

Thank you for the vegetarian gravy recipes

I'll definitely be trying them.

How about houmous recipes? Wasn't there a poster called Sheherazad (sp?) who knew the 'right' way to make it. But then she scarpered...what a tease. Can't find the thread now.

bundle · 30/03/2008 17:40

twinings: you are absolved

i occasionally have a jar of pasta sauce in cupboard - but ONLY the lloyd grosman puttanesca one - the others are way too sweet. i would normally add tin tomatoes/jar of passata to that.

but yes, i normally make my own. tis not hard

BecauseImWorthIt · 30/03/2008 17:50

Fry onions and garlic, add salt/black pepper/oregano and/or basil, tin of tomatoes. Simmer for about 20 minutes.

Job done!

Nowhere near £10! Probably under a pound, actually, especially if you buy Sainsbury basics chopped tomatoes.

And tastes much nicer than out of a jar.

Actual preparation will take you no more than 5 minutes. You can then sit down with a glass of wine and help the children with their homework while it cooks.

Miggsie · 30/03/2008 18:01

...gosh, well DH insists on the dried up pre fried onions that you get in the Indian foodshop in Hounslow, the thing is, he is RIGHT, adding them to a curry does give you that authentic, gloopy, thick, sauce texture that hitherto, we had not been able to achieve.

Tortilla in packets!!!? I have made them myself but it is such a faff, says the woman who DOES make her own puff pastry!

I am inconsistent I know that.

Anyone who posts that they use scone mix out of packets will have to die of shame...it's flour butter and sugar, those REALLY hard to get ingredients.

My DH LOVES Bisto
The shame, the SHAME!
He also likes marmite, I rest my case.

BBBee · 30/03/2008 18:04

salad cream
those things that used to be called 'crab sticks'

I don't know MF - jarred sauces always taste different when I've come across them. I think they put sugar in them as well as all kinds of other ingredients that wouldn't be there if you'd made your own.

chocolatedot · 30/03/2008 18:14

A tin of tomatoes costs around 50p. I make a huge vat once every few months and then freeze it in portions. I use it as it is for pizza base, pasta sauce and as a sauce with chicken or meatballs and then add stuff like cinnamon and brown sugar to use with moroccoan lamb and so on with 100's of variations.
