Heating something up twice

I made a huge cottage pie on Weds for mine and DH's dinner, intending to use it for last night as well. But he worked late both nights, so there's still plenty left to use up. As I didn't know he was working late last night, I've already re-heated it once...can I re-heat it again without poisoning us both?

Oh god, don't know whether to risk it or not . I can't bear the thought of throwing it away - I know it's only cottage pie but it's one of my faves and it's really yummy, even if I do say so myself .

As long as you heat it thoroughly and so that it's nuclear in the middle it should be fine. The reason we're told not to is that every time something is warm bacteria will grow. But if you heat it hot enough the bacteria will be killed.

As cottage pie is not something you can easily stir (unless you want all the potato stirred in!) I would avoid using the microwave as there is always a risk that the middle isn't hot enough.

Re-heat it in the oven, on a medium heat for at least 40 minutes (covered to stop the top burning).

If you are really worried, when you serve your portion up, zap your plate in the microwave for a couple of minutes.

Mind you, you then won't be able to eat it for about 10 minutes without risking burning off the inside of your mouth!

I have done this many times - butI dont give it to dc. Just make some more gravy/different veg. enjoy.

Do what becausei'mworthit recommended. I have done it many times and tbh the risks are quite small if it's been kept covered in the fridge in between uses. Make sure it is piping hot though.

can't you eat it cold?

chocolatedot · 28/03/2008 13:12

Heat it up, as longas its properly hot it will be absolutely fine, particularly as it was only made on Wednesday. It would be a sin to waste it.

Thank you all! I did as suggested, heated it up really thoroughly and ate a huge portion, which was really nice and I'm still here to tell the tale .
