Crumble fillings - not apple

I'm just wondering what are some of your fav crumble fillings? Mine is apple, but peeling, coring, chopping is a PITA.

Any tinned/ frozen fruit work well? I thought of frozen mix berry or tinned pear would they work?

I'm 13 weeks pregnant and loving crumble and custard!

Tinned pear, peaches or apricots.

Seeline · 06/02/2024 11:40

Tinned apricots work brilliantly.
I also like plum - you do need to remove the stones though.

Rhubarb is easy just chop it up and sprinkle with sugar before topping with crumble

FawnDrench · 06/02/2024 11:40

Rhubarb - it's in season now - bootiful!

hexsnidgett · 06/02/2024 11:41

Plum is the best, but frozen cherries works well and is very easy.

solsticelove · 06/02/2024 11:42

Tinned black cherries are amazing in a crumble 😋

Tiddlywinks63 · 06/02/2024 11:45

I don’t peel apples for crumble, just de-core and slice. Add blackberries and it’s delicious 😋
Try pear and tinned peaches, or canned apricots.

tinyraccoon · 06/02/2024 11:45

My MIL did rhubarb with stem ginger last time and it was absolutely incredible - I’m excitedly waiting for our rhubarb to be ready to pick and I’ll be making one!

KnickerlessParsons · 06/02/2024 11:45

Rhubarb, plums, blackberries, tinned peaches (go well with blackberries), raspberries, gooseberries.... pretty much any fruit really!

KeepSmiling89 · 06/02/2024 11:46

Another fan of rhubarb here!

pontipinemum · 06/02/2024 11:46

Oh thanks everyone!

I just checked I have a tin of pears, pineapple and fruit mix so I think I'll try pear today not sure the others would work! I WFH so may even make it at lunch

I love peaches so think I'll get some of those. Cherry sounds good too

My great gran used to make rhubarb crumble I loved it. I'll see if the ILs are growing any this year

Frozen berries can work well, i use them often you just have to be careful as they can be a bit too wet.

karmakameleon · 06/02/2024 11:49

If apple is your favourite but you can’t be arsed to peel, core and chop, I’m fairly certain I’ve seen prepared bramley apples in Waitrose.

Otherwise I like plums and Nigel slater does a good chocolate pear one, and although he uses fresh pears, I’m sure it would work with tinned.

pontipinemum · 06/02/2024 11:50

@SirenSays I saw on Lisa and Johns weekend kitchen she stirred a spoon of flour into the berry mix for that reason.

Made a plum and apple one on Sunday, (plums out the freezer). Added a bit of cinnamon and allspice. Very nice, but also like rhubarb, peach - have our own peach tree - and apple and blackberry.

Blueberrycreampie · 06/02/2024 11:56

Forgot pear which is lovely and also add some mincemeat sometimes to apple etc!

Tinned black cherries are amazing in a crumble 😋

Yes was going to say the same thing used to make it all the time when I was younger

BoreOfWhabylon · 06/02/2024 12:11

Canned apricots. Also delicious baked with a sponge topping, like Eve's pudding.

shockeditellyou · 06/02/2024 12:27

Tinned apples work well.

Lunde · 06/02/2024 12:29

Frozen raspberries

LauderSyme · 06/02/2024 12:34

Yes I vote for rhubarb! And blackberries and greengages. Delicious. I don't peel apples for crumble either. Roasted nuts and oats are nice added to the crumble topping too.

I have recently become a big fan of bags of frozen fruits, eg summer berries, blueberries, etc. I've been making smoothies but am sure they'd do good puds too 🙂

bakermummy21 · 06/02/2024 12:49

frozen autumn fruits and throw in some extra black cherries or raspberries. My go to every time as it's yummy

NoCloudsAllowed · 06/02/2024 12:50

I like to put a layer of sliced banana on top of fruit, under crumble. It kind of caramelises and melts into the fruit.

Ratfan24 · 06/02/2024 12:51

Frozen Mango and add a bit of dessicated coconut into the crumble.
