Crumble fillings - not apple

I'm just wondering what are some of your fav crumble fillings? Mine is apple, but peeling, coring, chopping is a PITA.

Any tinned/ frozen fruit work well? I thought of frozen mix berry or tinned pear would they work?

I'm 13 weeks pregnant and loving crumble and custard!

Frozen summer fruits

Raspberries with a teaspoon of ginger in the crumble

LoreleiG · 06/02/2024 23:28

I did frozen mixed berry the other day!

Have done banana and blueberry in the past too. I remember having gooseberry crumble a lot as a child as we had gooseberry bushes.

Tinned apples work well.

I can't seem to find those? I live in rural Ireland and get Tesco delivery for my shop. Might go to the massive Asda in Enniskillen once a year if I'm there shopping for other things but it's an hours drive.

It needs fruit with some sharpness to contrast with the lovely sweet crumble. As I said up there ^^ I prefer apricots, but use those canned in juice rather than syrup

beguilingeyes · 07/02/2024 14:40

Rhubarb and ginger with a bit of port stirred in. yum.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 08/02/2024 16:46

I don't think you need to peel apples for crumble.

But an oxo apple slice and corer for £8-10.

My preference is raspberry, used straight from the freezer.

Strawberry crumble is delicious! And I'm someone who really doesn't like strawberries very much. Too sweet. But in a crumble, oh my.

CadyEastman · 12/02/2024 09:26

Sainsbury's sell tinned rhubarb and that works well.

There's a good recipe for tinned peach crumble on Love Canned Food here.

Blackcurrants!

Love blackcurrant crumble, such a nice contrast with the sweetness of the crumble and the sharpness of the berries!

pontipinemum · 12/02/2024 11:07

@marmaladeandpeanutbutter I might get one of those. I wouldn't mind the skin so much it's the core and missing bits of it. I just want a few idea for very very easy crumbles. Opening a tin, draining it v peeling or just coring apples is always going to be easier.

We had pear crumble last week it was very nice. I may have put too much crumble to fruit tho and I usually like it heavy on crumble

Even better if you use grenadine syrup instead of/in addition to port. Genuine grenadine, that is, not the artificial stuff. Game changing.

@pontipinemum I use crumbles as my easy no -time puddings.I have a food processor so I mix the fat and flour in it. I might replace the butter with walnuts or ground almonds. Then sugar to taste, but not a lot to be honest. If I'm really pushed for time I'll chuck a pack of frozen fruit in the dish with a bit more sugar, dump the 3 item crumble on to and cook! I sometimes just use up what fruit I'm wanting to get rid of.

That oxo apple corer is also great for slicing apples to eat in the evening with a (very) heaped teaspoon of peanut butter.

Finally, if you have kids, I find they are fascinated by them 😄

pontipinemum · 13/02/2024 08:30

@marmaladeandpeanutbutter I have a food processor I did wonder if I could do the crumble in it. Would you use the metal blades or the plastic ones? My recipe for the crumble is just 3 ingredients as well 100g flour, 50g stork, 50g sugar multiply as needed. Although I do reduce the sugar normally. I might start experimenting with oats/ nuts etc in that.

I have a 1.5yr old I think he'd love it. I think he'd also love that spiral thing up thread. We had one growing up and I don't think they could keep apples in the house for a while!

Frozen berries can work well, i use them often you just have to be careful as they can be a bit too wet.

@SirenSays would mixing the frozen berries with a bit of flour beforehand help a bit?

EDIT: @SirenSays @pontipinemum D’OH! I didn’t read ahead! Ignore me 😂

DinnaeFashYersel · 13/02/2024 12:29

Rhubarb

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 13/02/2024 18:05

@pontipinemum normal metal ones.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 13/02/2024 18:07

Ps fat and flour first, then add the sugar for the last few seconds. If you add it all together, it can 'cake'.

Ambleen · 13/02/2024 18:35

My favourite quick storecupboard crumble is with tinned apples and frozen cherries. Sainsburys do chunky, not overcooked nor sloppy, unsweetened tinned apples. Frozen cherries can go straight from the freezer into the dish, they will be ready when the crumble is and don't release too much juice like other frozen fruit.

determinedtomakethiswork · 13/02/2024 18:52

Tinned raspberries in their own juice are lovely with a crumble. My favourite is actually blackcurrants but it's hard to get tinned blackcurrants anywhere.
