Why does my slow cooker refuse to cook lentils and lead me to nearly burn down my house?

I put some soup in there last night on low, thinking that by lunchtime today it would be lovely. Root veg were beautifully cooked, but there was a great clump of uncooked red lentils at the bottom.
I put the soup onto the hob to cook the lentils, forgot about it, and about an hour later came downstairs to a very smoky kitchen and a ruined pan.
So much for using up all that veg!

Why doesn't it cook lentils??????

Sounds like you need to ask Carmenere... legendary MN cook. She'd know!

They were in there from 9:30pm until noon the next day! I thought you weren't supposed to take the lid off and stir?
