URGENT HELP - HERB/SPICE CUPBOARD

Washersaurus · 10/03/2008 16:55

How do I identify ground coriander from the other 20 unlabelled jars in my cupbard?

It's medium-dark brown and the smell is not particularly distinctive.
If it smells of curry it's probably cumin.

Washersaurus · 10/03/2008 16:58

so it isn't paleish brown?

maybe....

Kathyis6incheshigh · 10/03/2008 17:02

oops

Washersaurus · 10/03/2008 17:05

problem is I've now narrowed it down to 2 jars that could be coriander..but I can't tell which it is .

Has it got a spicy smell/taste at all? I've got one that has a slight spiciness about it and one that is paler that smells of nothing much

Yes, it should smell spicy.

How pale is the pale one? Could that be ginger?

Washersaurus · 10/03/2008 17:17

The other one doesn't smell of anything really (I AM useless at identifying herbs) but I don't think it is ginger as there is a labelled jar of that in there too.

This is DH's idea of sorting the cupboards; putting it all in jars with no flipping labels.

I'm just going to randomly choose one I think and see how it turns out

if they don't smell of much then they are probably a bit old and therefore won't taste of much either - therefore you can't go too wrong!

Washersaurus · 10/03/2008 20:16

I don't think they are old, the cupboard has only recently been 'sorted'.

I used the one I thought most likely to be coriander given the images kathy linked to . The meal was OK so maybe I got it right this time.

Thank you for your help. I will have to have another word with DH about the labelling; it is enough trying to prepare a meal with a 2yo and a 7mo at my heels without having to play guess the herb/spice!
