Polenta - Is this the most disgusting food item in the world??

I have just cooked a meal involving 'Polenta squares'. It is the most revolting thing I have ever tasted and the texture. Yuk.
So does it have any redeeming features or should I bin the bag of it I bought?
I read somewhere it can be used in cakes. Really? Anyone had any success with using it in baking.
I am quite shocked as I like nearly everything but I am having to cook pasta as I type as I can't expect any of my family to eat it.

no gnocchi beats polenta IMHO

Monkeybird · 05/03/2008 17:19

yes. Gnocchi good. Polenta bad.

Onlyaphase · 05/03/2008 17:19

Polenta is yuk

QueenMeabhOfConnaught · 05/03/2008 17:19

Bin it - it is supremely disgusting.

Twiglett · 05/03/2008 17:20

hah .. no I meant gnocci is more disgusting than polenta

chopchopbusybusy · 05/03/2008 17:22

You can bake with polenta if you buy the ground flour like polenta not the made up squares which you have and are sadly only really fit for the bin

VanillaPumpkin · 05/03/2008 17:23

It really is revolting isn't it? I am quite .
I thought I liked gnocci though.....but I think I have only had it once and maybe there is a reason for that...

Polenta can be really good, it's just really tricky to get right.

VanillaPumpkin · 05/03/2008 17:24

Oh no I have the ground stuff. I made the squares myself wasting using three tablespoons of freshly grated parmasan .

Did you give it all the love and care it asks for whilst cooking it?

francagoestohollywood · 05/03/2008 17:26

Polenta can actually be very good, but needs to be covered in stew or put in the oven with lots of cheese, otherwise is tasteless.
Hand made gnocchi are fab. Those bought in supermarkets are horrible, I agree.

I make polenta squares drenched in parmesan and a creamy mushroom sauce which is fab.

I really do wonder where you went wrong?

I love polenta ... I like it with meat (sausages, quail etc) with a rich winey sauce...

I don't like polenta gnocchi (alla romana) but I love potato gnocchi... with gorgonzola sauce... mmmmmmmmmm

VanillaPumpkin · 05/03/2008 17:33

Hmmm. It did explode in an exciting volcanic manner over me at one point.

I like polenta, but it is a bit of a faff.

Like potato gnocchi too.

it's good fried like a fish cake and cut into slices.

pointydog · 05/03/2008 17:39

I have made a lovely cake with polenta in it, had it as a pudding with fresh mango and creme fraiche. The dried grains

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/03/2008 17:40

yes, I love orange and polenta cake and I don't mind gnocchi
