Do you use an apron when cooking or baking?

Someone suggested I get aprons for cooking with my little DD which is such a sweet idea and made me realise I have never owned one. Does anyone still use them when cooking? A bit of a pointless post but keen to know what people do in their kitchens. If you do, any particular brand to recommend?

Yes because I have ruined far too many tops with greasy cooking stains,

AnneLovesGilbert · 18/09/2023 14:04

Yes! Nearly every time. I’ve got two and they’re both ancient so no idea where they’re from but they’re pretty basic so just get something you like. DD4 has one too and it saves me extra laundry. Hers is a bit fancy and personalised, a gift from my very generous sister.

If I am cooking something that might splash or have nice clothes on I use one. Also if I am baking because I am a minger who wipes my floury hands on my arse.

Get a big apron that goes a long way around you and make sure the fabric is really think and densely woven.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 18/09/2023 14:06

I can’t imagine not using an apron! I often wear one when I am doing any serious cleaning as well, so I don’t get spatter on clothes. I’m also a fan of beach for sinks , so I don’t want white spots on clothes.
My Gran used to wear an overall, or a sort of aprons with shoulders; a lot of women in France still do, they sell them in all the supermarkets, but I haven’t gone quite that far.

LoserWinner · 18/09/2023 14:07

Always. I wear plain t-shirts and jumpers, and food splashes cause extra washing. I have three aprons, one on, one in the wash, one clean.

SpaceJamtart · 18/09/2023 14:09

No, but I have ones for my daughters, they are cute and save their clothes from about 2/3rds of the ingredients that would be on them othewise

Ladyj84 · 18/09/2023 14:15

Yes and our 4 kids have there own or I would have to do a wash after we finished baking day lol

Wow I had no idea they were so common! Mum mum always uses on but she is in late 70s, I always associated an apron with something a bit old fashioned but now I want one too and feel like I have been missing out!! :D

We've got 3 on a hook in the kitchen. None of us put them on until something starts splashing/spitting on the hob by which time the item of clothing is already needing to go in soak! 🙈

nzborn · 18/09/2023 14:58

Yes and even with some eating

Stripeypyjamas · 18/09/2023 15:00

My family are so messy it's got to the point of hazmat suits

toastofthetown · 18/09/2023 15:02

Sometimes. If I’m having a day where I’m cooking a lot then I will, but I won’t day to day cooking. I do like wearing it though. I have an IKEA apron and love it. The straps thread through the apron part, so it’s totally adjustable (I find most aprons assume my neck is 20cm longer than it is) and it’s also really cheap and durable.

jolaylasofia · 18/09/2023 15:03

no i don't wear clothes that i go out in inside the house anyway

HareSong · 18/09/2023 15:04

Always! When washing up, too. I got fed up of fatty stains that never came out of t-shirts. I love the adjustable ones from IKEA, when you can fix the apron at the height you want it on you (without having to knot the neck up!). They're a good solid weave, and just about indestructable.

Thighdentitycrisis · 18/09/2023 15:22

@Allthegoodnamesarechosen
I want an overall!
like a 1940’s long wrap around one

TimeToStopLurking · 18/09/2023 15:32

Oh yes, I love a good apron and it lives on a hook right by the cooker. Goes on most days especially if I'm making anything which might splatter or when I'm using my hand blender

a tabbard?

NatWestPigFamily · 25/09/2023 00:17

I have a personalised apron I use for baking which was an anniversary gift from DH and a black apron with diamanté and a big pocket. I also have a novelty Xmas apron which was a stocking gift. The kids have their own from Ikea. The one I use the most is a red apron from Portugal that belonged to my late mum, it makes me happy to wear it and reminds me of her bustling around in the kitchen cooking delicious family meals.

RightOnTheEdge · 25/09/2023 00:22

Oh! I'm surprised that everyone so far has said yes. I very never worn one and don't own one.
I didn't realise so many people did.

Peaceandquietfinally · 25/09/2023 00:23

I probably do need one but have no idea where to get one from! What kind of shop actually sells them ?

catnipevergreen · 25/09/2023 00:37

Baking yes , general cooking no. Always have a tea towel / towel on hand to wipe/dry my hands though in general cooking

Saschka · 25/09/2023 00:38

Yep, if I’m cooking something I expect to splash! Tomato sauces, or frying things. Not for a quick pasta dinner, and actually rarely for baking, unless I am baking with DS who is a messer.

Muji, IKEA, Sainsbury’s…

Teddleshon · 25/09/2023 00:41

I wear aprons from Toast whenever I cook. I can’t imagine not wearing one as otherwise my clothes would be covered in flour and grease marks etc.

tescocreditcard · 25/09/2023 00:48

Yep. Always wear one, they protect clothes from stains.

This is my current one - I absolutely adore it and it's 30 years old now and apart from a bit of fraying on the shoulder its still going strong.
