Do you use an apron when cooking or baking?

Someone suggested I get aprons for cooking with my little DD which is such a sweet idea and made me realise I have never owned one. Does anyone still use them when cooking? A bit of a pointless post but keen to know what people do in their kitchens. If you do, any particular brand to recommend?

Those Toast ones are gawjuss. Now I want one of those. They look indestructible.

Teddleshon · 25/09/2023 01:02

I can’t recommend the Toast denim ones enough - indestructible and surprisingly stylish!

I wear aprons for all cooking and baking activities, to protect my clothes from grease and tomato sauce based dishes. I also like being able to wipe my hands on my apron if I am in a hurry. I also have a PVC apron for cleaning the bathroom and loo - I got fed up with the amount of clothes I ruined from bleach splashes.

Most of my aprons came from Ulster Weavers and have lasted years. However, I now really want to try a Japanese style, cross back apron, they look so comfortable and I love the earthy neutral colours they come in.

I always wear one, and I have a sort of half housecoat, too, that's very retro in style and colour. When my DCs were little, my mum made aprons for all of them one Christmas Smile

I don't but I've got three hanging on the kitchen door .. my DH always wears one when he's doing the cooking.

NailyDale · 25/09/2023 02:33

Don't know why, but I have a cooking apron and a baking apron. I love them both. I also have a much less nice cleaning apron, which I would never wear to cook or bake.

DaftyLass · 25/09/2023 02:35

Yes, and a kerchief, both to keep me clean, and keep my hair/sweat out of cleaning/food prep/eating
When I see how much ends up on them, I'm glad I use them!

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 25/09/2023 22:17

Not often enough. Only when baking. I often regret it on other occasions.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 26/09/2023 07:58

No but DS always does. Perhaps I should get one.

Qwaszx · 14/10/2023 13:42

Yes. When cooking, washing up, cleaning. I have a few, including one I made at secondary school 40 odd years back. Occasionally wear one if I'm planting seeds or potting on in the garden too.

Couldn't care less what people think of me wearing in my own home.

uhtredofbattenberg · 15/10/2023 16:19

Yes if wearing a pale top. To avoid those little spot stains.

Mum2jenny · 15/10/2023 16:22

Never, don’t possess one either.

greengreengrass25 · 15/10/2023 16:23

Usually I do

AtomicBlondeRose · 15/10/2023 16:24

Yes, I never used to but started in the past couple of years. And I’m messy so even if I didn’t cook I often put one on to eat if were having something that might stain! I don’t think people do generally though.

aliasname · 15/10/2023 16:30

I’ve got a tabard (dislike things round my neck) but I always forget to wear it.

great idea upthread re. wearing one for gardening!

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 15/10/2023 16:33

Yes, always. I end up with tomato stains or grease stains otherwise.

I am very short so always have to shorten the bit that goes over your head, or my boobs poke out over the top 😀and my top ends up dirty.

Get one with a pocket across the middle, like a kangaroo, if you can. Surprisingly useful for things like random cloth, tea towel, carrying spices etc to cupboards.

Mothew · 15/10/2023 16:34

I have one for cooking or baking and another for when I'm painting/doing DIY.

Dunelm have a good selection.

MapleSyrupWaffles · 15/10/2023 16:48

Definitely. And often keep it on for eating, too! (But then I tend to eat at my desk as I live alone, so not as pulled up to the table as I might otherwise be).

I got mine from John Lewis - they have lots of nice ones that match their kitchen range for the year (table mats, picnic stuff, tablecloths, etc) though I only got the apron as I don't want to match too much!! The neck is a bit long though. Or, not so much long, but something about it make it gape in the front and I can still drop things down the neck when I'm eating..

indiandreaming · 15/10/2023 21:58

It annoys me that no one wears an apron on come dine with me. I don't cook often, but I do reach for an apron when I do.

Anselma · 17/10/2023 08:51

I've never seen the point of aprons as they don't cover enough of my clothes, need something with sleeves.
Started watching Lessons in Chemistry on Apple TV and Elizabeth Zott wears a white coat when cooking, so will try that.

Nokoolaidherethanks · 17/10/2023 08:53

I own one but rarely remember to wear it unless I'm wearing posh clothes!

dontcallmelen · 17/10/2023 09:06

Always wear an apron when I’m baking, another one who otherwise wipes hands on clothes, mine is from dunelm has the the adjustable neck straps & a kangaroo pocket in densely woven cotton, I also think of my mum when I’m wearing it as she always wore an apron mainly ones she made herself wish I had kept some of them.

AlannaOfTrebond · 17/10/2023 09:19

Yep, I love an apron.
I don't bother wearing one if I'm doing something like a sandwich for lunch, but proper cooking always. I also wear them for grubby jobs like cleaning muddy boots or potting plants.
I have a selection as I can't resist them and often find myself with apron envy if I'm in one of those cafe's where the staff have cool ones as part of their uniform.
I'm only in my 40's....

Papillon23 · 17/10/2023 09:24

I own an apron but don't wear it religiously. I wear for baking or cooking things I think might stain.

threecupsofteaminimum · 18/10/2023 00:58

I would if I had a big country style kitchen in a big gaff and spent time in the kitchen cooking and all that jazz but since I only wear comfy old stuff around the flat and it's only me and DS it's a tad unnecessary.
