With the stupidity of tired mother first thing in the morning i asked ds what kind of cake he would like for his birthday tomorrow. - dinosaur cake was the answer and he was very specific about the type of dinosaur - think of a little tyranasaurus with a mohican. ideas please.

Some ideas here W&C - good luck!

I made this one for DS last year. It's from the dorland kindersly book. (The picture isn't my actual cake btw but it came out quite well)

MamaG · 04/03/2008 12:19

witchandchips - DS is 4 on Friday and he too wants a dino cake!

MamaG · 04/03/2008 12:20

MaureenMLove sent me a fantastic recipe for a really impressive cake, with a page of instructions but I'm not going to have time to make it

Instead, I'm making:-

choc cake

covered in choc buttercream (dino mud!)

green icing T-Rex plonked on top (have made blu-tack model today as test run, its fine!)- flat rather than standy up.

mini eggs around the edge (dino eggs!)

witchandchips · 04/03/2008 12:27

thanks everybody x

well by 12 last night it was finished. Could not quite get the jaw right and was more some result of a one night stand between a diplodicus and a stegasaurus than a t-rex but ds was well impressed this morning which is the main thing

well done!
can we see a pic?

witchandchips · 05/03/2008 09:41

MamaG · 05/03/2008 11:55

Hurrah

Yes, I'd like to see a pic

Making mine tomorrow - DS announced this morning taht he wants a triceratops not a T rex GAH - going to be fun trying...

witchandchips · 05/03/2008 12:01

candles for ruff + bits of white icing for horns.

MrsBadger · 05/03/2008 12:04

Mamag that one on the front left of my first link would be easy to add horns to for a triceratops

MamaG · 05/03/2008 12:28

Hmm yes it would, wouldn't it.

I have found this and thought I'd do green icing "flat" shaped dino with white horns?

Will it be crap?

To enhance dino theme I made sandwiches and cut them out with some cutters that a generous MN sent me, scrubbed some rocks from the garden, covered the table with them and and balanced the food plates on and amongst them, on a plastic dino tablecloth (courtesy of another MN-er!!) and placed little plastic dinos amongst the rocks (and yet another sent me some good value plastic dinos!)

MamaG · 05/03/2008 12:34

that sounds fab Blu

witchandchips · 06/03/2008 09:51

picture posted on my profile. its not great as dp deleted the photos with the best angle so you can't see the tail

OP posts:
Blu · 06/03/2008 11:23

Wow!

That's FANTASTIC!

MamaG · 06/03/2008 11:51

thats brilliant ! Wish me luck for making mine tonight...

witchandchips · 06/03/2008 11:59

thanks was actually quite proud as it is my first attempt at anything like it. Needless to say the children only ate the icing and the decorations (well how can a victoria sponge base compete with chocolate fingers, vermicilli, mini eggs et. )
