Oranges

Can anyone tell me if its ok to eat the white pith on oranges. I had an orange the other day and it was one of those ones where the pith was totally stuck on the orange and when I tried to pick it off lump of the orange came off too. Don't know why but I have a dim and distant memory of being told when I was little not to eat it.

My Granny will tell you that you shouldn't eat the pith because it will lie on your chest.
