What's seasonal (cheap!) for making preserves?

I got into making preserves when we had a glut of cooking apples. Would like to make more but don't want to end up spending a fortune. What would be seasonal to make now? (jams/jellies/chutnies). Am thinking onions are always pretty reasonable so might look out an onion chutney recipe. Any other ideas (or tried and tested onion chutney recipe) please?

Go to your local market at the end of the day and get a big box of whatever they are selling for cheap. Then find a recipe to match.
Onions are always good though, Asda sell huge bags of onions for a couple of quid atm.

Thanks Carmenere. We don't have a market very close by but will investigate whether I can find one near enough for the petrol/parking costs not to outweigh the savings. Will definitely try onion chutney, would likeother ideas of things which are good for preserving and reasonable in the supermarket/greengrocers.
